Wind Turbine To Save Enerergy, Money at Community College

NORMAL- Heartland community college is trying to reduce its carbon footprint in a big way.

On Friday the college celebrated its commercial-grade wind turbine. It's the first in the state to to sit on a college campus. Rather than buying electricity, the college will be able to make half of what it needs, cutting down on cost and pollution.

After some financial help the turbine cost HCC about three-and-a-half million dollars, but that debt should be payed back in 15 years. Then the college will start making money off of the savings.

And that's not the only benefit.

"Because we have an active turbine on campus we have a lot of green economy related programming for the students to pursue career wise. So they can do everything fom photo to wind energy," said HCC President, Allen Goben.
