'I'm fascinated by her,' Cowell says of singer, who's rumored to be contender to join show.

There are several women's names currently being tossed around as potential judges for the upcoming season of "X Factor." Avril Lavigne, Janet Jackson and Britney Spears are the leading rumored contenders to replace Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul for the show's completely revamped second season, which kicks off later this year.

In a recent press call, Simon Cowell would not confirm who producers were talking to, but he did not deny that Jackson was on the table.

"You can probably count on two girls," fellow judge L.A. Reid added. "That we can confirm."

Cowell recently addressed the Britney buzz on Billy Bush's radio show, continuing to play coy about the chatter. "Well, I'm fascinated by her. The fact that she's still one of the most talked-about — not just pop stars, but people — in the world today means that you've got this star power. This girl's got resilience, and the fact that she's survived this and she's still hot, she's still having hit records and she's still controversial ... there's a reason for that.

"I would think that if she's managed to sustain a family, a career, which is tough, this is a walk in the park," he added, noting that he believes she would be a good judge.

While Cowell seems to be dancing around the issue, British "X Factor" judge Louis Walsh may have let the cat out of the bag in an interview on U.K. talk show "Craig Doyle Live." He shared that Spears was indeed talking to producers about possibly joining the show.

"I know he is talking to Britney. I know he's definitely talking to Britney to do the American show. Absolutely true and maybe Janet Jackson," he said.

In the end, Cowell summed up the current spate of rumors on that conference call. "There's a load of speculation, some true, some not true. It's true to say that a lot more people have entered the frame this year. We were waiting to see who was going to contact us before we actually contacted people," he said last week. "We're in that place right now, which is a good place to be in. We will meet a number of people over the next few weeks, mainly to explain to them that this is a big commitment when you do a show like this because of the mentoring aspect."

NEEDINESS - Many people enter a relationship believing that it's their partner's job to fill their emptiness, take away their aloneness, and make them feel good about themselves. When folks have not learned how to be responsible for their own feelings and wants and to define their own self-worth, they may pull on their partner and others to fill them with the love they want.

SUBSTANCE AND PROCESS Obsessions - Most people who feel empty within turn to substance and process obsessions in an effort to fill their emptiness and take away the agony of their aloneness and solitude. Alcohol and substance abuse, food, spending, betting, busyness, Net sex and porno, affairs, work, TV, amassing things, decking out, and such like can all be used as methods to fill emptiness and avoid fears of failure, inadequacy, rejection and engulfment. And they are all ways of shutting out your companion.

EYES ON PARTNER'S PLATE - Many of us are very conscious of what their partner is doing that is causing relationship issues, but fully oblivious of what they are doing. As an example, you may be awfully conscious of your partner's resistance or withdrawal, but totally ignorant of your own unforgiving behaviour.

You could be awfully conscious of your partner's resentment, but totally unaware of your own compliance. You might be very mindful of your partner's addictive behavior, but very unaware of your own enabling. So long as your eyes are on your companion rather than on yourself, you may continue to believe that if only your better half changed, everything would be O.K.

RESOLVING RELATIONSHIP KILLERS - All relationship killers come from fear of inadequacy, of failure, of rejection and of engulfment. So long as you are coming from any of these fears, you will be behaving in one or two of the above ways.
The way out is to develop a loving adult self who knows how to take full responsibility for your own feelings and needs.

GPS again among devices mulled in piracy fight : Kaieteur News

Once again, Global Positioning System (GPS) for fishing boats along with improved coast guard monitoring, is being touted by Government and relevant authorities to prevent piracy.
This was disclosed at a Fisherfolk consultation held at the International Convention Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara yesterday.
Stakeholders in the fishing industry met with the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Robeson Benn, Minister of Agriculture Leslie Ramsammy and Department of Fisheries officials, to underscore matters of interest that would develop the industry.
Also present were representatives from the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, Trawler Association, Police, Co-ops, Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) and Search and Rescue Centre.

Groups were formed and opinions were given by each group on how to move forward. There were discussions pertaining to the use of internet, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and GPS, remote sensing and other technological advances to stymie piracy.
This is the first of regular engagement at the national level and at regional levels, as Government tries to enhance fishing within the economy and development of the sector.
Brian Young of Quark Communications Inc. who gave a presentation on use and benefits of a Global Positioning System (GPS) said that if fishermen were to approve and support the technological system, Government would be footing the bill for the service which would enhance the way piracy is dealt with while lives could be saved, and the chances of apprehending pirates could be improved.
Minister Benn said that the meeting was to have a more comprehensive database of persons who are active in the fishing industry to develop maritime safety, security and piracy.
?We?d like to adopt one of the initiatives to have a more comprehensive database of the persons who are active in the industry at various levels, and who are the main players. We want to be able to react to issues of maritime safety and security,? Benn explained.
He said that experiences have shown that with the absence of rapid quick information to the maritime rescue coordination centre, which has communication devices needed to respond to the piracy in the fishing industry, there will always be ineffective maritime search and rescue.
?Even if we were able to acquire some of the assets that coast guards and maritime administration department and search and rescue centres have in other jurisdictions, the effectiveness of the use of those resources depends on the use of the resources? and will only result in any good if there is a good database and early information to preempt any untoward activity,? Benn explained.
Lt. Coast Guard, Adrian Mc Lean said that in his line of duty there is need for adequate information and intelligence about the whereabouts of fishing vessels to assist in the deployment of coast guards to assist fishermen.
He recommended that boats be fitted with GPS, and even surveillance cameras and other tracking devices so that the relevant authorities could locate a vessel in distress.
Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy who is in charge of the sector, emphasized that the fishing industry is an important component in Guyana?s economy and development.
?Guyana is one of few developing countries that have met its MDG (Millennium Development Goal) of feeding its people. In terms of food security, the fishing industry provides a relatively cheap source of animal protein in the Guyanese diet, an essential element in meeting the dietary needs, in meeting the caloric intake and in meeting the balance meal criteria.?
Adding that the fishing industry provides employment to over 15,000 persons directly and indirectly, Ramsammy said this provides significant foreign exchange earnings, as it represents an average of just under three percent (3%) of GDP. Exports over the past three years average about 17, 000 metric tonnes with an average value of $10B Guyana dollars.
He said per capita, fish supplied in Guyana exceeds 58 kg, as compared to approximately 17 kg as a global average.
?This in itself indicates that fishing is important since we exceed the fishing needs related to food security requirements in Guyana and provide a genuine growth pole for exports.?
Ramsammy further noted that aquaculture presently accounts for more than 45 per cent of the global supply.
?In Guyana, however, aquaculture has been growing slowly, but still marine and inland capture fish continues to be the major source of fish supply to meet local demand and for exports. In terms of aquaculture, we have reached an average of about 400,000 kg and an export average of about 56,000 kg annually.?
Underscoring that on the local front, a boat count of artisanal vessels in the last year revealed that there are 1,234 of boats, an increase from the last count in 2005, Ramsammy said of great concern was that only approximately 1/3 had fishing licences last year.
Ramsammy further said that the success and safety of fishing and the various stakeholders depend on the authorities knowing how many persons are engaged directly and indirectly in the industry, and where fishing is done.
He continued: ?We need these data, so that, in collaboration with the Coast Guard, MARAD and other stakeholders, we can be able to serve you better, offer more security at sea, and you will be able to receive the benefits that a licenced boat is expected to receive.?
Adding that robbery at sea, especially among the artisanal vessels has been occurring frequently over the years, Ramsammy said his Ministry held discussions with the Coast Guard and MARAD earlier this month and will implement recommendations made by these officials.
He explained that fishermen must recognize that the development of the fishing industry must be done in an environment that takes into consideration the many facets of policy and governance, especially in relation to employment and poverty alleviation, the impact of climate change, biodiversity loss, quality certification and product traceability.
?We must recognize the changing environment in terms of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Global laws and regulations can impede the growth of local fishing industries in developing countries. We must be aware of these emerging issues and position ourselves to be a player within the emerging legal fishing dispensation in our region and regions around the world.?

Man United's cash reserves fall

LONDON - Manchester United's cash reserves fell by 100 million pounds ($158 million) in six months partially to finance an investment in a roster failing to maintain the English champions' dominance.

As a result of spending that also took in stadium improvements and a bond repurchase program, the Old Trafford bank balance dropped from 150.6 million pounds to 50.9 million pounds ($238 million to $80 million) to Dec. 31, the club's quarterly accounts revealed on Tuesday.

Despite net spending of 48 million pounds ($76 million) on new players, including goalkeeper David de Gea, defender Phil Jones and winger Ashley Young, United failed to advance past the first round of the Champions League and has been eliminated from both domestic cups. Meanwhile, neighbor Manchester City holds two-point lead in the Premier League.

United spent 5.3 million pounds ($8.4 million) in the three months ending Dec. 31 buying back bonds that were issued two years ago to raise 504 million pounds (then $762 million) to replace long-term financing and reduce debts to hedge funds.

United has spent 92.8 million pounds ($147 million) repurchasing that debt ? more than the 80 million pounds (then $130 million) received from Real Madrid in 2009 for the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The club's debt, resulting from the 2005 takeover by the American Glazer family, stood at 439 million pounds ($694 million) at the end of 2011 and incurred almost 24.5 million pounds ($39 million) in interest payments in six months.

Although the debt was down from the 508 million pounds at the end of 2010 it rose again in the final three months of 2011 by 6 million pounds ($9.5 million).

However, United's moneymaking abilities appear to be undiminished, with 175 million pounds ($277 million) in revenue in the six months ending Dec. 31 ? up more than 10 percent on the same period a year earlier due largely to a rise in TV income and a new training jersey sponsorship deal with express delivery and freight firm DHL.

"Revenues continue to grow strongly although costs are increasing just as quickly so pretty much negating that growth," the Manchester United Supporters' Trust said in a statement. "However the key figures of interest to supporters show the Glazers have now spent every penny of the money received from the sale of Ronaldo, and more.

"That's now 92.8 million pounds spent on buying back their own bond debt that they loaded onto our club."

MUST said that since Ronaldo's departure, net transfers totaled 90 million pounds ($142 million) while 225 million pounds ($356 million) had been taken out of the club to cover debt payments and interest.

"What could the club have done with that extra 225 million pounds? Cheaper tickets for loyal fans, investing massively in the squad and stadium, developing and retaining the best youth players, competing on an equal basis with the very best teams in Europe," MUST said. "This is the true cost to Manchester United of the Glazers' ownership."

Pfizer says its drug is best hope for Alzheimer's (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Pfizer Inc research chief Mikael Dolsten said the company's experimental treatment for Alzheimer's disease is the drug industry's "best chance" to delay progression of the memory-robbing illness.

Dolsten, speaking at the BIO CEO and investor conference in New York, stopped short of predicting whether the drug being developed with Johnson & Johnson would meet that goal.

"This is so far the best chance the industry has for disease modification in Alzheimer's," he said. Dolsten said Pfizer's drug, bapineuzumab, had far more complete and compelling data from already finished mid-stage clinical trials than Eli Lilly and Co's solanezumab.

Both companies plan to release Phase III data in the second half of this year from their respective large trials. The drugs are meant to be the first to slow progression of Alzheimer's, a disease that affects an estimated 5 million Americans and more than 35 million people worldwide.

"Bapineuzumab was the only one of these two that had significant Phase II data," Dolsten said, referring to the relatively brief 12-week trials Lilly conducted on solanezumab before moving it into large late-stage studies.

By contrast, Pfizer's Phase II studies of bapineuzumab lasted 18 months, better enabling Pfizer to pick appropriate doses of the medicine in far larger ongoing Phase III studies.

But mixed results were seen among patients receiving bapineuzumab in those smaller earlier studies. Patients in one mid-stage trial had an almost 25 percent lower accumulation in the brain of amyloid plaques -- a suspected cause of Alzheimer's disease -- than those receiving placebo injections. But they achieved no cognitive benefits. And patients receiving high doses of the Pfizer drug in another mid-stage study had worrisome brain swelling.

Asked in a recent interview if Lilly's short Phase II studies might hurt its drug's chance of succeeding in bigger Phase III trials, Dr. Eric Siemers, head of Lilly's Alzheimer's program, said, "The jury's still out; we don't know if it was the right choice."

But Siemers told Reuters the shorter trials enabled Lilly to get solanezumab into late-stage trials far more quickly and at far less expense, hopefully without compromising future results.

Many investors consider bapineuzumab and Lilly's rival injectable drug long shots because they treat patients that already have developed mild to moderate symptoms, such as memory loss and inability to perform daily chores, and therefore may have suffered irreversible damage to neurons and brain tissue.

Dolsten cautioned that Alzheimer's patients would probably need to be treated at earlier stages of the disease to produce the most beneficial results, a prospect he sees likely within the next five years.

Pfizer is counting on newer drugs to deliver revenue needed to offset plunging sales of its Lipitor cholesterol fighter, which has faced cheaper generics since November.

They include Prevnar 13, an improved form of its Prevnar vaccine to prevent infections with streptococcus bacteria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in December approved its use for adults aged 50 and older, greatly widening the market for the product, which had been approved only in children.

Dolsten said Pfizer expects data by next year from late-stage trials testing whether Prevnar 13 prevents pneumonia in adults. The $3.3 billion-a-year vaccine could get a big commercial boost if the trials succeed, especially in preventing

pneumonia among the elderly, he said.

The world's biggest drugmaker also has high hopes for tofacitinib, an experimental pill that treats rheumatoid arthritis through a new approach and is awaiting U.S. approval.

The FDA is slated to decide on tofacitinib by August, but Dolsten said an FDA advisory panel of outside experts is likely to weigh the drug's safety and effectiveness beforehand.

"We expect a dialogue about how this drug will be used," Dolsten said, given its new mechanism of action. It is the first in an emerging class of drugs known as JAK inhibitors that block a protein associated with inflammation.

The research chief also expressed confidence Pfizer will eventually develop an anti-smoking vaccine and important new treatments for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Last year, Pfizer said it would slash its annual research budget by as much as $2 billion in order to deliver on earnings goals.

Dolsten on Tuesday said Pfizer wants to remain a research leader but will likely increasingly team up with other drugmakers, and rely more heavily on contract research organizations (CROs) to conduct its large late-stage trials.

Sports and Fitness Science: High intensity interval training in health ...

I have been reading in the last two days the very recent review from Martin Gibala on high intensity interval training (HIIT) and its effectiveness on health and disease. This is an excellent review paper which shows how effective this training modality is as well as how efficient it is, considering that gains can be obtained with a lot less time than conventional aerobic exercise modalities.

Considering the body of knowledge so far accumulated on the beneficial effects of high intensity exercise, sometimes I wonder why I still see team sports players spending precious training time on an athletics track running 1000 meters and above.

Evidence suggests that? when compared on a matched-work basis or when estimated energy expenditure is equivalent, HIT can serve as an effective alternate to traditional endurance training, inducing similar or even superior changes in a range of physiological, performance and health-related markers in both healthy individuals and diseased populations (Hwang et al 2011; Wisloff et al 2007).

Growing evidence suggests also that low volume HIT stimulates physiological remodelling comparable to moderate-intensity continuous training despite a substantially lower time commitment and reduced total exercise volume (Gibala & McGee 2008).

In fact, many authors found similar training-induced improvements than conventional endurance exercise in various markers of skeletal muscle and cardiovascular adaptation despite large differences in weekly training volume (~90% lower in the HIT group) and time commitment (~67% lower in the HIT group). In addition to an increased skeletal muscle oxidative capacity, other endurance-like adaptations have been documented after several weeks of low-volume HIT include an increased resting glycogen content, a reduced rate of glycogen utilization and lactate production during matched-work exercise, an increased capacity for whole-body and skeletal muscle lipid oxidation, enhanced peripheral vascular structure and function, improved exercise performance as measured by time-to-exhaustion tests or time trials and increased maximal oxygen uptake (Burgomaster et al., 2005; Burgomaster et al. 2008; Gibala et al. 2006; Rakobowchuk et al. 2008).

The protocols used are pretty similar. Here is a summary table.

The results are of course pretty impressive and compare well with conventional endurance exercise.

In Burgomaster?s et al. study (2008), VO₂peak increased after training, with no difference between groups (HIT vs. conventional aerobic (ET)). Peak power output elicited during the Wingate Test increased by 17% and 7% in the HIT and ET groups, respectively, with no difference between groups, whereas, mean power output was increased by 7% only in the HIT group. ET consisted of continuous cycling on an ergometer, 5 days per week (Monday?Friday) for 6 weeks, at a power output corresponding to ?65% VO₂peak. Subjects performed 40 min of exercise per training session for the ?rst 2 weeks. Exercise time was increased to 50 min per session during weeks 3 and 4, and subjects performed 60 min of exercise per session during the ?nal 2 weeks.

Time trial improved more in the HIT group (SIT in the figure below) when compared to the ET group (6 sessions of sprint interval training (SIT) or endurance training (ET) over 2 weeks). The ET group performed training consisted of 90?120 min of continuous cycling at an intensity corresponding to 65% of VO₂peak. Training progression in the ET group was implemented by increasing the duration of exercise from 90 min during sessions 1 and 2, to 105 min during sessions 3 and 4, and finally to 120 min during sessions 5 and 6.

Considerable evidence currently exists to support a role for low-volume HIT as a potent and time-efficient training method for inducing both central (cardiovascular) and peripheral (skeletal muscle) adaptations that are linked to improved performance and health outcomes. However few things should be considered when prescribing training programmes involving high-intensity training.

1) HIT requires ?all out? supramaximal efforts followed by low intensity efforts. If you prescribe a programme asking your athletes to sprint at ?60% of their max? or anything like that, they are not performing high intensity interval work.

2) Maximal means ?all out?, I see too many ?interval sessions? with intensities below 100% of an athlete?s max.

3) Adequate recovery is needed and workloads planned should take into account the ability of the individual involved.

4) Heart rate and blood lactate monitoring will provide you with the necessary? information to be able to manipulate sets vs reps as well as recovery protocols, as well as giving you feedback on how your athlete/client is progressing.
