China says world should support Syria mediation efforts

BEIJING (Reuters) - The world should act with greater urgency to support the mediation efforts of the U.N.-Arab League's Syria peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi as the situation is worsening, state media quoted China's foreign minister as saying on Wednesday.

Yang Jiechi also repeated a call for all sides in the Syria conflict to cease fire immediately and take steps towards forming a transitional government, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

"The international community should fully cooperate with and support envoy Brahimi's mediation efforts with a more intense sense of urgency and responsibility," the report cited Yang as telling Brahimi during a meeting in Beijing.

"Relevant parties should as soon as possible appoint authoritative representatives to come up with a roadmap for a political transition with the help of envoy Brahimi and the international community," Yang added.

"China believes that the situation in Syria is worsening by the day," he said. "The only realistic way out is to resolve the Syria issue through political channels."

Syrian warplanes bombed rebel targets with renewed intensity on Tuesday after the end of a widely ignored four-day truce between President Bashar al-Assad's forces and insurgents which had been proposed by Brahimi.

China and Russia have vetoed three U.N. resolutions condemning Assad's government for the violence.

But China has been keen to show it is not taking sides and has urged the Syrian government to talk to the opposition and take steps to meet demands for political change. It has said a transitional government should be formed.

Stop PetSmart from Discriminating Against Certain Dog Breeds ...

By Billie Hassim

Target: PetSmart

Goal:?Stop the discrimination certain dog breeds face as a result of PetSmart?s policies

PetSmart, a company that claims to love pets, is currently practicing breed stereotyping and discrimination. They currently offer a program called ?Doggie Day Camp? in which dogs can spend the day interacting and socializing with each other under the supervision of employees. The invitation to attend ?Doggie Day Camp? is extended to all healthy dogs with the exception of ?bully breeds.? Pit Bulls, Bull Dogs, and Bull Terriers are among the breeds listed on PetSmart?s website as ?bully breeds.?

Stereotyping and discriminating against certain breeds of dogs demonstrates the lack of knowledge about these breeds. Each year, several dogs that are deemed as ?bully breeds? are abused and euthanized based on the misconception that they are dangerous. These animals did not choose to be born into a specific breed; they are being condemned from birth by a society that fails to understand them.

A pet is not a bad pet simply because they belong to a breed with a bad reputation; being a specific breed does not automatically make a pet ?dangerous.? A pet?s behavior and temperament should be based on their upbringing and their training, not on how they look or their breed.

As a company that claims to love pets, PetSmart should not be encouraging discrimination against specific dog breeds. By supporting the stereotype of ?bully breeds,??PetSmart is sending the message that these breeds are in fact dangerous. On their website, PetSmart also discriminates against ?mixed breeds that have the appearance or characteristics of one of these breeds.? According to PetSmart, simply looking like a ?dangerous? pet automatically makes a pet dangerous.

Other measures must be taken in order to assess if a pet is actually dangerous or not. Instead of excluding dogs from ?Doggie Day Camp? because they are of a certain breed, PetSmart should require a behavior assessment from either a veterinarian or a trainer. This would be a fair requirement not only for ?bully breeds? but for all of their doggy?campers.

There is always a chance that a truly aggressive dog will be let into ?Doggie Day Camp? because they are not classified as a dangerous ?bully breed.? Demand that PetSmart stop discriminating against the pets they claim to love. Sign the petition below to urge PetSmart to change their discrimination policy against innocent dogs that are classified as ?bully breeds.?

PETITION LETTER:

Dear PetSmart,

As a company that claims to love pets, you should not be encouraging nor practicing breed stereotyping and discrimination. The polices regarding your ?Doggie Day Camp? program are extremely unfair to what you deem to be ?bully breeds.? These dogs cannot attend ?Doggie Day Camp? simply because they are deemed ?dangerous? by society; no other measures are taken to ensure that these pets are in fact dangerous. These dogs are being denied the enjoyment of interacting and socializing with other dogs because they belong to specific breed.

I am urging you to find a more efficient method when attempting to exclude dangerous dogs from your ?Doggie Day Camp? program. Behavior assessments from a veterinarian or a trainer would be a much more effective method of determining whether or not a dog should be allowed to attend the day camp. You cannot claim to love pets if you continue to discriminate against certain types of pets, especially if they are innocent of the accusations you are making against them.

Do not exclude an innocent dog from your program just because they look dangerous or belong to a breed that is considered to be dangerous. Please take the action to end discrimination against ?bully breeds? by setting the example that these dogs are not dangerous by default.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

Festival du Monde Arabe: Arab cultural influence addressed to ...

MONTREAL ? What does the term ?Arab? mean to you? Now?s the time to test your preconceptions by checking out what?s happening on the Arab cultural front in some of the 22 countries of the League of Arab States, as well as related countries, at Montreal?s Festival du Monde Arabe (FMA). The perimeters of the FMA extend to anywhere Arab cultural influence may be felt in the world.

And that includes Ontario.

Festival spokesperson Emily-Jane Aouad underlines that the FMA, founded in 2000 by Joseph Nakhl?, a Lebanese Christian, is ?a festival addressed to Canadian audiences. It?s not just a community event.?

One of the musical acts at the 13th edition of this festival is a group called the Sultans of String. Based in Toronto, this five-member ensemble led by Chris McKhool and Kevin Laliberte combines Arab folk music with Spanish flamenco, Cuban music and French Gypsy-jazz.

About 70 to 75 per cent of those who attend the festival are non-Arab Quebecers, Aouad said. The mandate of the FMA, which is produced on a budget of about $800,000, is to create a dialogue between Arabic and Western cultures. Last year?s attendance at ticketed events was about 17,000, she said, for an overall total of about 25,000.

Musical groups run the gamut from to Algerian hip hop (Lotfi Double Kanon and Foursen) to Afghan folk (Zohreh Jooya and the Afghan Ensemble). But there?s more to the FMA, which opens Friday at multiple Montreal venues, than music.

The festival has three mains sections: Performing Arts, Cultural Forums and Cinema.

This year, the FMA?s major spectacle, Dieu en 3D (God in 3D), combines devotional music and dance from Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Muslims are represented by a Syrian Sufi group, The Whirling Dervishes of Aleppo.

Yes, that?s Aleppo, Syria, where life still does go on, in spite of the ravages of a bloody conflict. ?Hopefully, nothing will happen to them before they arrive,? Aouad said.

Earlier versions of the show, seen here in 2003 and 2004, involved only the dervishes and a Christian Gregorian-chant choir. ?This year we have integrated the Jewish tradition,? she said.

Dieu en 3D will close the festival on Nov. 10.

The FMA is multi-generational, too. There?s a children?s play called Ali au pays d?Alice, by Francis D?silets, about early Syrian immigration to Montreal. Co-produced by the FMA and Place des Arts, it will play at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Cinqui?me Salle of PDA.

Many free FMA events will be presented at Place des Arts during weekends between 5 and 7:30 p.m.

For adults, there?s a potentially controversial play called Les Monologues voiles, directed by Adelheid Roosen, billed as a Muslim woman?s answer to The Vagina Monologues, by Eve Ensler. But this French import isn?t an official part of the festival, Aouad explained. It runs Dec. 6-15 at Place des Arts.

As for movies, the performing arts section of the festival is more fully developed than the cinema section, Aouad explained. Only five FMA films will be shown at Cin?ma du Parc, Nov. 2 to 4. Two of them are Lebanese (It?s all About Lebanon, directed by Wissam Charaf; and Marcedes, by Hady Zaccak). One is from Egypt (Cairo 78, by Mohamed Diab), another is from Morocco (Andalousia, My Love!, by Mohamed Nadif) and the final one is a Moroccan, German and French co-production (On the Edge, by Leila Kilani). All are in Arabic with French surtitles, except for Cario 678 and Marcedes, which have surtitles in English.

Jerusalem's secular Israeli minority showing life

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Hundreds of people packed a Jerusalem community center recently for what many in Jerusalem consider a subversive act: They attended a lecture on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath.

The seemingly harmless event, in which the popular Arab-Israeli journalist Sayed Kashua talked about pluralism and tolerance, broke a long-standing ban on holding activities in public buildings on the Jewish day of rest.

That turned Kiryat Yovel, a tranquil neighborhood in west Jerusalem, into the latest battleground in Jerusalem's protracted culture war between Jewish conservatism and pluralism.

After years of setbacks, Jerusalem's secular population has begun to push back against what many believe are heavy-handed tactics by the city's ultra-Orthodox residents to impose their religious mores on the general population. A growing number of restaurants now open on Saturday, an array of cultural events have sprouted up, and for the first time in years, a longtime exodus of secular residents for nearby suburbs appears to have halted.

"We're not against the ultra-Orthodox, we're for tolerance and integration and against intimidation. But from no public services offered on Saturdays to promoting gender segregation, the community is undermining the very basis of our democratic state," said Dina Azriel, a leader in the grassroots "Free Kiryat Yovel" initiative, which sponsored the recent lecture.

While most Israelis are secular, Israel's founding fathers gave Judaism a formal place in the country's affairs, and Orthodox rabbis strictly govern religious events such as weddings, divorces, and burials for the Jewish population. The ultra-Orthodox are also perennial kingmakers in Israeli coalition politics, though they make up only about 10 percent of the country's population.

The influence of the ultra-Orthodox is especially pronounced in Jerusalem, where their numbers are proportionally much larger than the national average. Jerusalem, Israel's largest city, is split almost evenly into thirds between secular and modern Orthodox residents, Muslim Palestinians, and the ultra-Orthodox Jews.

Many modern Orthodox Jews live and work with the secular population while maintaining a religious life style, in contrast to ultra-Orthodox, who choose to live in insulated enclaves.

The ultra-religious have used their large numbers and political muscle to shape modern Jerusalem. The city grinds to a virtual standstill on the Jewish Sabbath, with businesses closed, public transportation halted and few options for entertainment.

Attempts to change this status quo have prompted violent backlashes from the ultra-Orthodox, who haven't hesitated to block roads, clash with police or send tens of thousands of activists into the streets when ordered by their rabbis. In 2009, the city experienced riots when it allowed a parking lot near Jerusalem's Old City to open on the Sabbath to serve out-of-town tourists.

In recent years, the ultra-Orthodox have grown bolder, pressuring the local bus company, Egged, to operate gender-segregated lines through religious neighborhoods, attempting to separate men and women on public sidewalks and ripping down billboards with female images on them. Because of the threat of vandalism, Egged recently decided to cease all advertising on its Jerusalem buses by October 2013.

The "Free Kiryat Yovel" movement was formed after ultra-Orthodox activists were allowed to build a kindergarten that maintained a wall to separate religious and non-religious preschoolers. It took four years of petitioning the local community center to win a permit for the Sabbath lecture.

"We're in a really critical time right now, and I'm not optimistic," said Sarit Hashkes, who runs another secular rights group, called "Be Free Israel."

"What we're seeing now is cooperation of state and police officials with the ultra-Orthodox. Women are being pushed aside, and everything is pushed more to the right."

The group is behind a number of initiatives, like offering discount cards to patrons to use at restaurants that are open on the Sabbath to increase "secular buying power."

Hashkes said momentum among the secular population is percolating, but not without an equally fierce backlash. While separate sidewalks are officially banned, she said some streets were still off limits to women during the recent Jewish Sukkot holiday.

Just last week, a prominent female activist was arrested for wearing a traditionally male prayer shawl at the Western Wall, the holiest place where Jews can pray, an act that police prohibit because of Orthodox Jewish sensitivities.

Anat Hoffman said police strip-searched her and jailed her overnight, releasing her only after she agreed to stay away from the site for a month. The incident occurred as she led prayers for 200 American Jewish women from Hadassah, a Jewish women's group that was celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Over the years, the growing religious influence, coupled with a high cost of living, has pushed tens of thousands of secular Jerusalemites to leave the city. Navigating a complicated balancing act, Mayor Nir Barkat, a secular, former high-tech businessman, has attempted to revive secular life in the city without alienating the ultra-Orthodox.

Barkat's office says the mayor has boosted the city's culture budgets since he was elected in 2008, quadrupling events like concerts and street festivals to enliven the city and encouraged new housing in secular areas to draw young couples and families.

"Despite a small number of friction points in the city, Jerusalem has seen a dramatic reduction in tension between the Ultra-Orthodox and secular communities in recent years," said spokesman Barak Cohen.

In a sign that secular life could be making a comeback, the mayor's office noted that enrollment in secular schools increased in the last school year for the first time in 15 years.

Naomi Tsur, a deputy mayor of Jerusalem, noted that for the first time in 15 years, there is a clear non-Orthodox majority in the city council, another sign of secular revival. Modern Orthodox schools also posted slight gains.

Whether these trends can continue remains unclear. More than 60 percent of Jewish students attend ultra-Orthodox schools, according to the Jerusalem Institute of Israel Studies.

Tsur, an urban planner who has promoted coexistence among Jerusalem's diverse populations, said "a lot will hinge" on whether the secular masses turn their concerns into election issues. "People usually go to vote on 'shall we go to war with Iran,' but we need to work together on making an appealing mix that will attract young and dynamic couples to live in Jerusalem," she said.

With parliamentary elections set for January, Kiryat Yovel activist and art historian Daniel Unger thinks these issues will continue to be pushed to the back burner.

"This is a real issue that (Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu and others don't want to address," he says. "Instead, he keeps talking about the Iranian bomb, in hope that his people won't pay attention to the domestic social and economic issues he's ignored."

A Lack of Real Vision is Stalling the PR Industry | Business 2 ...

PR thought leaders and industry crisis

First, a caveat ? I don?t know the folks whose quotes I?m about to use as examples of why the PR industry is struggling. They could be (and probably are) very smart and accomplished business people.

So, this isn?t a ?go? at them.

With that being said, however, this recent report/white paper does seem to highlight exactly why the PR industry is continuously seen as one that?s been slow to adapt to the new business landscape and, as such, is holding agencies and consultants back.

First, let?s take a look at the piece.

The PR Firm of the Future

As a precursor to the PRWeek Conference on November 14, Michael Lasky ? senior partner and head of PR at law firm Davis & Gilbert LLP ? asked this question:

What is the most important way in which the PR agency of 2017 will be different from the PR agency of today?

Michael asked 8 leaders of independent agencies. The responses included:

- Ken Eudy, CEO, Capstrat: ?The PR firm of 2017 will increasingly help is clients become publishers and broadcasters? communicating directly with stakeholders without having their messages filtered through traditional media.?

- Maril MacDonald, CEO, Gagen MacDonald: ?The successful firm of 2017? will be interested in relationships, not transactions. It will think about the long-term strategy, not short-term tactics. It will add value through a technology-driven collaborative dialogue??

- Elise Mitchell, CEO, Mitchell Communications Group: ?The firm of the future will be known as a business strategist with communications expertise. It will offer integrated services that create solutions? leveraging earned, owned, paid, shared and promoted media in all channels including digital.?

- Jennifer Prosek, CEO, Prosek Partners: ?Practitioners in 2017 will be required to think across the marketing mix and successfully drive campaigns versus simply owning the traditional earned media channels. Firms will need to articulate the value of results that engage their audience versus simply offering impressions.

These are just four quotes I pulled from eight agency leaders. Others include:

  • ?Providing value at this level is not only the key to establishing lasting partnerships, but also creates a desire? to partner with this organization?;
  • ?Multidisciplinary expertise will be the firm?s leading competitive asset?;
  • ?THE PR firm of the future? will deploy a mix of paid, earned, owned and shared media that can be monitored and measured directly in real time.?

All good stuff. All good advice. If this weren?t already happening today in 2012, versus what should happen in 2017.

The PR Firm of Today and Yesterday

While there are some good quotes from the assembled eight agency folks, the ?problem?, if you like, is that they were asked what the PR firm of the future would look like.

So, you?d kind of hope/expect to hear stuff that no-one?s really doing at the minute, or ideas that are really pushing the industry forward.

Unfortunately, the majority of the soundbites would be futuristic if they were answers from circa 2008/2009.

Suggestions that brands become publishers and broadcasters, for example, miss how well blogs and social networks have been used by brands and agencies for the last 3-4 years.

You only need to look at programs like Sony?s Digital Dads, or Ford?s blogger outreach campaigns, to see how well this has been done in the last few years. And smaller businesses are increasingly using blogs to educate their audience and grow their customer audience and loyalty.

Then there?s the prediction that the PR firm of the future will deploy a mix of paid, earned, owned and shared media while being able to monitor and measure in real time.

When I was working on a RIM account back in 2009 to launch the Bold 9700 in the U.S., we used a collaborative strategy that saw us involve Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to create a fully interactive experience for you and your friends. This was supplemented by paid media ads as well as partnerships with BlackBerry communities.

We measured and identified where the campaign was working, where it needed help, and which communities were driving real value and worth around the promotion.

The result was millions of impressions, thousands of handsets pre-ordered and sold, and an industry award for the campaign itself.

That was in 2009 ? and I know we weren?t the first to use true integration in campaigns.

The Future is Now

And this is exactly why this ?prediction paper? just adds to the view that PR is being left behind, versus countering that belief.

There?s no doubt that there are great agencies doing great things. Companies like Arment Dietrich, RKPR, Mullen, Voce, V3 and more. And the reason they?re leading the way today is because they?re already practicing what?s being predicted for 2017.

They?re integrating channels and expertise now. They?re not silo?ing PR from marketing from digital from strategy from creative and more ? they?re running these as fully integrated ideas from the start, and have been for years.

My friend Rick Rice, a 35-year industry veteran, sums it up best with this quote:

The PR business is need of disruptive change and none of this generation are even willing to try.

There?s no doubt the PR industry has a perception problem, and it?s great to see it trying to move forward. I just wonder how far it can move when it still seems to be behind the curve on so many things?

What Is the Worst Budgeting Tip You've Ever Heard?

Personal-Finance-Roundtable-Worst-Budgeting-Tip

Welcome to the?Personal Finance Roundtable, where we tackle some controversial money questions with the help of our favorite personal finance bloggers, once a month.

In the days of?King Arthur, the?roundtable?signified the place where consequential ideas were discussed ? hopefully over good food and good drinks. While we don?t yet have virtual food and drinks, we can at least create a place to discuss important topics related to your finances and get a wide range of viewpoints.?So, without further ado, this month?s question is?

Elle and Rob from Couple MoneyElle from Couple Money: ?The worst piece of advice I received was to keep my mortgage as long as I could to get the tax benefits. The person giving me the advice was talking about the mortgage interest credit. The numbers, however, don?t add up. Paying more interest over the life of the loan to get a small fraction is a money-losing strategy.?

Planting Our PenniesMrs. PoP from Planting Our Pennies: ?Add $10K in non-tax deductible interest payments to your budget (not to mention principal paydowns) each year! Well, that?s not exactly what our ?personal banker? at Wells Fargo said when he offered us a $100K unsecured personal loan at a 10% interest rate, but it may as well have been. Taking a loan or line of credit offer just because it?s offered seems to be some of the worst budgeting advice we?ve ever been given.?

Greg-and-HollyGreg from Club Thrifty: ?My answer isn?t so much of a tip as it is an attitude. I know several people who think that, just because they paid their bills, they stuck to a budget. While paying your bills is great, it is not budgeting. You actually have to sit down each month and write out a paper budget. You have to consciously tell that money where it is going to go. If you don?t, you are bound to mindlessly spend it.?

David BakkeDavid Bakke from Money Crashers: ?Several years ago, I had amassed a significant amount of credit card debt. When I finally decided to do something about it, a family member suggested that I cash in my employer-based 401k plan and pay off all my credit card debt in one fell swoop.?I never took the advice, and I?m glad that I didn?t.

Unless there?s a serious emergency and you have no other recourse, you should never touch your?retirement savings, 401k or otherwise. The first reason not to do this is because you?ll pay an early withdrawal penalty, as well as income taxes on the amount you withdraw. Secondly, you may destroy the nest egg you?ve worked on building up for your retirement. The long-term benefits of compounded interest with a?401k plan?far outweigh any upfront interest costs associated with credit card debt.

MirandaMiranda from Planting Money Seeds: ?The worst budget tip I heard came from a loan officer while I shopped around for a mortgage. He said I could be approved for three times the amount I wanted to borrow. Then he told me it was worth it to take the loan, since the house would only appreciate, and that it made sense to stretch the budget a little, to make it work.?Since my husband and I decided that we didn?t want to be house poor, we chose a loan from another lender.

Stretching our budget to pay for a home that we didn?t really need seemed ridiculous, especially since then we wouldn?t have the money to do other things that we enjoyed. It doesn?t make a lot of sense to tie up so much money in mortgage payments, and we didn?t want to have problems in the event of a financial setback.?

Ben from Money Smart LifeBen from Money Smart Life: ?My least favorite budgeting tip is to start with a blank sheet of paper and write down all your expenses. I?ve never tested it but I?d bet that people who start with a list of expenses and fill in the blanks with their spending estimates are much more likely to create a budget than someone who starts with a blank sheet and has to think up all their expenses on their own.

There?s something intimidating about a blank sheet of paper, you feel as though you?re starting from nothing and have to figure it all out on your own. In contrast, if you start with some kind of template you?re more likely to get started and actually end up with a budget.?

What about you? Tell us in the comments: what?s the worst budgeting tip you?ve ever heard?

(AP) ? British soldiers and military dogs gathered at a London army barracks Thursday to honor a fallen hero with selfless courage, nerves of steel ? and four legs.

Theo, a bomb-sniffing springer spaniel who died in Afghanistan on the day his soldier partner was killed, was posthumously honored with the Dickin Medal, Britain's highest award for bravery by animals.

Theo worked alongside Lance Cpl. Liam Tasker, searching for roadside bombs in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold.

Tasker, 26, died in a firefight with insurgents in March 2011, and Theo suffered a fatal seizure hours later. Tasker's mother, Jane Duffy, says the pair were inseparable. She's convinced Theo died of a broken heart.

"They'll be watching us, and they'll be so proud," she said. "I just wish they were here to get it themselves."

Since 1943, the Dickin Medal has recognized gallantry by animals serving with the military, police or rescue services. Some of these animal heroes:

CANINE COMMANDOS

Theo is the 28th dog to receive the medal, awarded by animal charity PDSA and named for its founder, Maria Dickin.

One of the earliest winners was Rip, a mongrel found abandoned in a bomb shelter and adopted by a London air raid warden. He was credited with finding more than 100 people trapped in rubble by German bombs during the 1940 Blitz.

Another World War II hero was Rob, a collie who joined British commandos in more than 20 parachute operations behind enemy lines in North Africa and Italy. His medal citation said that "his presence with these parties saved many of them from discovery and subsequent capture or destruction."

Dogs have also been honored for service in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan and during terrorist attacks.

After the Sept. 11 attacks, Apollo, a New York Police Department German shepherd, received the medal on behalf of all search and rescue dogs at the sites in New York and Washington, "for tireless courage in the service of humanity."

WINGED WARRIORS

Pigeons' homing instinct makes them excellent messengers, and more than 200,000 served with British forces during World War II. Some 32 were awarded the Dickin Medal for carrying back vital information from the frontline.

Feathered medal-winners include Gustav, a pigeon serving with the Royal Air Force, "for delivering the first message from the Normandy Beaches from a ship off the beach-head" on June 6, 1944, the day of the D-Day landings.

GI Joe, a member of the U.S. Army Pigeon Service, was honored for flying 20 miles (32 kilometers) in 20 minutes with a message that stopped U.S. planes bombing an Italian town occupied by British troops in October 1943, saving the lives of at least 100 Allied soldiers and many civilians.

HEROIC HORSES

Upstart, a London police horse, is one of three equine recipients of the medal.

He was honored for a World War II incident in which a German flying bomb exploded 75 yards away, "showering both horse and rider with broken glass and debris."

Despite this, "Upstart was completely unperturbed and remained quietly on duty with his rider," controlling traffic until calm was restored.

A FEARLESS FELINE

Only one cat has ever received the Dickin Medal.

Simon, a Royal Navy ship's mascot, was honored for his service on HMS Amethyst, a ship shelled by Chinese Communist forces on the Yangtze River in 1949.

Despite being seriously wounded by shrapnel, Simon returned to his rat-killing duties aboard the damaged ship, which was trapped for months in Chinese waters.

"Throughout the incident his behavior was of the highest order," the citation said.

Simon and the ship's crew were greeted as heroes when they made it back to England, but the cat died weeks before he was due to receive his medal.

Amazon Looks East: Launches First Japanese Language Kindle ...

Take that, Rakuten! Amazon continues to extend its reach into new markets and increase its focus in Asia: today it announced pre-orders for its first Japanese-language Kindle, the Paperwhite, and, in another first, it has now extended its Kindle Store into Japan, opening with 50,000 titles in the library. It also today made Japan the latest market for Amazon?s Kindle Fire tablets: it?kicked off sales of the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire in the country.

The news comes as Amazon?s local rival, Rakuten, continues to press ahead with its ambition to match and beat Amazon at its own game both at home and further afield. In addition to is main business selling books and other goods online, Rakuten recently also introduced its own e-reader, the Kobo Touch Reader, aiming it at the same low-cost market as Amazon by pricing it at $99. Rakuten in May made a $100 million investment in Pinterest, which it has already started to leverage by integrating its marketplace with the platform.

Given that Amazon has already been selling books in Japan for the past 12 years, it has definitely not rushed to launch its Kindle line in Japan ? so is today?s news a sign that it must now be feeling Rakuten?s rivalry?

?After twelve years of selling print books on Amazon.co.jp, we are excited to offer the millions of Amazon.co.jp customers the new Kindle Store, with the largest selection of the books people want to read, the largest selection of Oricon best sellers in books, bunko, and manga, and over 50,000 Japanese-language titles?all available to anyone with a Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Fire, Android phone, Android tablet, iPhone, or iPad,? said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO.

Among the 50,000 Japanese-language titles in the new store, 10,000 will be free. There is also a strong emphasis on graphic literature, hugely popular in Japan, with 15,000 manga titles.

The Kindle Store, Amazon says, will open for business October 25 with some 68 Japanese-language titles exclusive to Amazon. Meanwhile, the Kindle Paperwhite will sell for ?8,480 ($106).?Amazon had announced its intention to extend its Kindle brand into Japan in September. That followed with the company extending its mobile app distribution portal to Japan earlier in October.

When Amazon launched its first Kindle e-reader in 2007, the company was criticised for its slow international rollout of the device. The reasons, it seemed, were three-fold: the keyboard issue (for non-English countries); carrier agreements for unlimited data usage; and trying to get the right mix of localized e-book content.

The move to touchscreen, keyboard-free devices, however, has made the hardware element of going international significantly easier for the company. The growing use of tablets and e-readers, meanwhile, has given rise to significantly more content available for the devices. Lastly, the fact that many are using WiFi as the primary way of connecting their new devices means that the company has less of a need to iron out local carrier negotiations.

It also helps Amazon immensely to make its device footprint as wide as possible. Not only does that mean much better economies of scale for making the device, but given that it?s pinning at least some of its hope on advertising revenues generated on those devices, increasing the number of Kindle users will be a crucial part of that strategy.

Excerpted releases below.

Nintendo reports continued first-half losses for 2012, is waiting on the Wii U

Nintendo's reported its financial results for the first of half of the year, and things are still a little rocky. Net sales in the last six months have decreased 6.8 percent compared to the same point last year, while net income continues to drop, this time by 27,996 million yen. As of September 2012, Nintendo has now sold over 22 million 3DS units (three million more since last quarter), while the Wii remains just shy of the 100 million milestone, settling at 97.2 million units sold. Nintendo looks to be in a similar position to last year, with customers still waiting for the company's next big console to appear -- and the gamesmaker hoping they will. Laying blame at the strong yen, the company has dramatically cut its forecast for the rest of the year, down from 20 billion ($250 million) to 6 billion yen ($75 million), pinning its hopes on 3DS sales ahead of the Wii U's global launch later this year.

Report: Most women need Paps every 3 or 5 years

Most women can wait three to five years between checks for cervical cancer, depending on their age and test choice, say guidelines issued Monday.

Many medical groups have long recommended a Pap test every three years for most women. The new advice from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that's true for women ages 21 to 29 whose Paps show no sign of trouble.

But for healthy women ages 30 to 65, the preferred check is a Pap plus a test for the cancer-causing HPV virus, the group concluded. If both show everything's fine, they can wait five years for further screening.

The guidelines from the nation's largest OB-GYN organization agree with advice issued earlier this year by a government panel, the American Cancer Society and other medical groups ? showing growing consensus that it's safe for the right women to wait longer between Paps.

Cervical cancer grows so slowly that regular Pap smears, which examine cells scraped from the cervix, can find signs early enough to treat before a tumor even forms.

Certain strains of HPV, the human papillomavirus, cause most cervical cancer, but the infection has to persist for a number of years to do its damage. HPV is a super-common virus in young women, whose bodies usually clear the infection on their own. Thus, health groups don't recommend routinely testing 20-somethings for HPV because it would cause too many false alarms.

A Pap averages around $40; HPV tests can add another $50 to $100.

The guidelines also say:

?Women 30 and older still can choose a Pap alone every three years.

?Screening shouldn't begin before age 21.

?Women over 65 can end screening if prior testing hasn't found problems.

Nick the Hat: In The Tank, Lovecraft eZine #15

I had the good fortune of being able to illustrate for the new tale in issue #15 of the Lovecraft eZine, 'In The Tank' by Scott Nicolay. An uncomfortable, claustrophobic and sad story of divorcee Roger, who just can't quite connect to anyone, his ex, his son, no job, nothing. Life seems rather dismal, and try as he might to make a connection, and he does try, he continues to push them in the opposite direction. Until he visits a small out-of-the-way? place called 'House of Pets' and 'Tropical Fish'. Thinking he can buy his sons affection with a pet fish and fuel the fires of romance with is ex, Roger finds himself sliding down a different path where 'something' connects with him instead.

I've read a few other short stories from Scott Nicolay and they've all delivered. 'Alligators' in the first issue of the Laird Barron edited Phantasmagorium from Gorgon Press is excellent, as is "Ana Kai Tangata" from the Aklonomicon and his up-coming story for Strange Aeons Magazine #10 will be sure to surprise.? His rural sense of style sucks you into a false sense of security, slowly stacking the odds of fate to play out in horrific ways against the main characters in less than obvious ways.
Pay attention folks, Mr. Nicolay will sneak the ice-cream from your cone before you know it.
