Super Bowl Party Food: What Nutritionists Serve To Keep Calories ...

Whether your team won or lost the Super Bowl last year, one thing's for certain: You overate.

The Super Bowl is an eating extravaganza for most Americans: While watching the big game, we consume an average of 1,200 calories from snacking alone, making Super Bowl Sunday the second-largest food consumption day of the year after Thanksgiving, according to a report from the Calorie Control Council.

This year, we'll be just as inclined to snack, but that doesn't mean we have to overindulge: We decided to ask some experts for their tips on avoiding the countless treats on offer between the couch and the big screen. We called up some of the most trusted nutritionists to ask what they'll serve at their Super Bowl parties.

Luckily, what these dishes lack in saturated fat and empty calories, they make up for in flavor: Think twists on classic Super Bowl favorites (dips, redefined), along with a few new traditions (like lamb and guacamole sliders) to add to the mix.

Here, their tips for making many more delicious, healthfully revamped Super Bowl snacks below. Scroll down for full recipes -- then tell us in the comments: how will you improve your spread?

  • Rich Dips With Lots Of Flavor And Little Fat

No Super Bowl party is complete without a creamy dip. But, heavy cheese or sour cream don't need to be your dip's base. Some lighter options: "I try to choose healthier dips -- like hummus, roasted eggplant spread, salsa, and guacamole -- rather than the sour-cream and cheese-based dips. And of course, tons of crunchy, colorful vegetables to go with them." --<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/monica-reinagel-ms-ldn-cns/"> Monica Reinagel, MS, LDN, CNS </a> "Hummus, herbed Greek yogurt dip, guacamole and salsa with baked corn chips and flax crackers." -- <a href="http://www.rocnutrition.com/">Rochelle Sirota, MS, RD</a> "I like to have a mix of healthy and fun (a.k.a decadent) foods so that you can enjoy 'Super Bowl foo'" without the 4,000 calories. Dips like spinach and artichoke -- or my favorite <a href="http://anutritionisteats.com/spicy-pepper-goat-cheese-spread">spicy pepper goat cheese spread</a> with slices of baguette." -- Emily Dingmann, Nutritionist, from <a href="http://anutritionisteats.com/">A Nutritionist Eats</a> "Instead of a high fat dip, I make mine with two percent Greek yogurt, which is already thick and creamy. I add in fresh herbs and spices like dill, garlic, and lemon juice. Of course, serving dips like black bean dip, salsa and guacamole is an easy way to get more nutrients. Just make sure your "chips" are made with a few simple ingredients and get whole grain tortilla chips if you can." -- <a href="http://rebeccascritchfield.wordpress.com/">Rebecca Scritchfield, MA, RD</a> "Enjoy the guacamole, which is made from heart-healthy avocados. Try to swap the tortilla chips for a few whole-grain crackers." -- <a href="http://www.drwayneandersen.com/">Dr. Wayne Andersen, Co-Founder of Take Shape for Life</a>

  • Go Nuts

Adding a variety of nuts to your spread is an effortless way to incorporate some healthy and filling fats to the menu. And to add a bit of portion control, the experts lean toward nuts with shells: "For an informal party like the superbowl, I like to put out bowls of peanuts in the shells. They're less salty than mixed nuts and, more importantly, having to shell the nuts slows you down a bit and helps keep you from overeating. (Fair warning: they are a bit messy! Count on vacuuming when it's all over.)" --<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/monica-reinagel-ms-ldn-cns/"> Reinagel </a> "I serve pistachios. Not only are they delicious, but they have the shell that helps to slow down how fast people can eat them. The serving is generous -- 49 kernels, compared to other nuts, like cashews, that have only 11 [per serving]. They are a good source of protein and the 'good' fats which help increase satiety and satisfaction which may help keep a person from over-indulging." -- <a href="http://rebeccascritchfield.wordpress.com/">Scritchfield</a> And for a little sweetness: "Cacao dusted almonds." -- <a href="http://www.rocnutrition.com/">Sirota</a>

  • Don't Get Delivery...

Make it in your kitchen. While you might be tempted to order in a few pies from your local pizzeria, making pizza at home can be a much healthier, but still delicious option, since you control the ingredients. Check out Blatner's BBQ Pita Pizza recipe above or, if you're getting down to the wire, pick a frozen option: "If you?re crunched for time or just not in the mood to cook, a healthy pizza can still be part of your Super Bowl menu. The frozen food section in the grocery store can be overwhelming. Too much sodium, too much sugar and too good to be true typically come to mind. I?m going to make it easy for you this year. When my clients have a pizza craving, I tell them to keep a Kashi Thin Crust Pizza BBQ Recipe Chicken in their freezer. It?s packed with whole grains, fiber and protein, which will help you feel full faster. It will be the hit of the party!" -- Heather Bauer, RD, founder of <a href="http://www.bestowed.com/">Bestowed.com</a>

  • Crunch On Some Crudit?s

Perfect to pair with (healthful!) dips, or just for munching on their own. "Raw veggies for munching and bulking up your plate: Carrots, cucumber, bell pepper strips, grape tomatoes and celery sticks (with a low-calorie greek yogurt dip perhaps)." -- Dingmann "Tri-color peppers with roasted pepper hummus -- full of color and fiber!" -- <a href="http://www.realtalkrealfood.com/">Angela Ginn-Meadow, RD, LDN, CDE</a> "Of course, I'll serve a smattering of colorful raw vegetables like baby carrots, cucumber, peppers, and celery. I make my own "platter" to control the quality of each ingredient." -- <a href="http://rebeccascritchfield.wordpress.com/">Scritchfield</a>

  • It's All About The Shrimp

The players on the field aren't the only ones who benefit from filling up on lean protein: You and your party guests will want shrimp's low-fat power for extra energy during (what we're hoping will be) the exhilarating half-time show. "Shrimp cocktail is another great option. High protein, low fat and people like it." -- <a href="http://rebeccascritchfield.wordpress.com/">Scritchfield</a> "Steamed shrimp with spicy cocktail sauce -- the Super Bowl can be tempting with endless wings, but try to reach for more veggies and lean protein choices." -- <a href="http://www.realtalkrealfood.com/">Ginn-Meadow</a> Or as <a href="<a href="http://www.rocnutrition.com/">Sirota</a> recommends, try grilling some wild shrimp for a different flavor and the same appealing nutritional profile.

  • Choose A More Colorful Chili

One nutritionist dubbed chili "a classic football party food," and we'd have to agree: It's a pretty simple dish that can feed dozens of hungry guests. And depending on how you prepare it, the dish can be a nutritionist's dream food: "I always make a big batch of chili -- it's a classic football party food but it's actually loaded with fiber, protein and vegetables. (Shh! Don't tell anyone.)" -- Reinagel "Typically I have a big pot of chili on the stove simmering. Depending on who's attending the party, it may be veggie chili or I may add ground turkey breast or ground round. I've used venison before from a hunter friend who preps and stores his own meat. Toppings include sliced green onions, reduced fat sour cream, shredded reduced fat cheddar cheese and Fritos (love the crunch)." -- <a href="http://www.susanmitchell.org/">Susan Mitchell, Ph.D., RD, LD/N, FAND</a> "Three-bean chili with mini corn muffins. -- <a href="http://www.realtalkrealfood.com/">Ginn-Meadow</a>

  • Remake Sides For The Snack Happy

Cheese doodles and pretzel rods might just be snacks of the past. Our nutritionists are serving tasty snacks that have a nutritional purpose, and they won't leave a neon-orange residue on your fingers. "Kale chips, black olives, grilled and roasted vegetables, popcorn, boiled eggs, and vegetarian sushi rolls filled with brown rice, avocado, cucmber and carrots." -- <a href="http://www.rocnutrition.com/">Sirota</a> "Make sure your "chips" are made with a few simple ingredients and get whole grain tortilla chips if you can. -- <a href="http://rebeccascritchfield.wordpress.com/">Scritchfield</a> "Fruit with Greek yogurt dip." -- <a href="http://www.sarahremmer.com/">Sarah Remmer, RD</a>

  • Sliders And Minis

You can still serve everyones favorite meat-centric dishes: these experts suggest keeping portions small -- think sliders -- to provide the tastes everyone craves without going overboard on calories. "These menu items lend themselves to being prepared ahead. Think bite-size nibbles, kabobs, plump shrimp, tiny sandwiches. The added bonus is that finger foods are less messy and will minimize clean-up time the next day. (And If you?re bringing the appetizer, your hostess will thank you for it, because it minimizes her need for extra plates or silverware.) If it can?t be consumed with one hand, rethink it." -- <a href="www.cherylforberg.com">Forberg</a> Some more ideas from our experts: "I'm serving BBQ pulled pork sliders made with pork tenderloin, so they will be low in fat and the sliders will help keep portion sizes in check." -- <a href="http://appleadaynutrition.net/blog/">Heidi McIndoo, MS, RD, LDN</a> "As a main course, I'll serve sliders made with ground lamb. On average, lamb is lean and nutrient rich. Lamb is an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals to help fill up your guests. Lamb is full of flavor and will help make the party memorable. The slider size helps people cut back on their portions. I'll leave off the cheese and instead serve toppers of salsa and avocados or guacamole." -- <a href="http://rebeccascritchfield.wordpress.com/">Scritchfield</a> "My ideal Super Bowl menu would have a protein component like turkey meatballs, grilled chicken drumsticks or chicken sausage pieces with toothpicks." -- <a href="http://anutritionisteats.com/">Dingmann</a> "Mini turkey burgers topped with wilted spinach and caramelized onions." -- <a href="http://www.realtalkrealfood.com/">Ginn-Meadow</a>

  • Sip Smart

While beer commercials might try to sway you otherwise, remember that you don't want to drink all of your calories (plus, it's a Sunday. Do you <em>really</em> want to go to work with a hangover?) Our experts suggest some festive concoctions that will keep you hydrated: "I'm serving rooibos & mint herbal iced teas and sparkling water with lemon, lime and orange wedges." -- <a href="http://www.rocnutrition.com/">Sirota</a></blockquote> Or try <a href="http://dawnjacksonblatner.com/">Blatner's</a> New Orleans Hurricane Cocktail (see recipe, above).

  • Sweets

You don't have to serve that store-bought football-shaped monstrosity of a cake to cater to your guests' sweet tooth. "<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/112238215684137801/">These chocolate clusters</a> are always a hit?easy to make and portable." -- <a href="http://www.susanmitchell.org/">Susan Mitchell, Ph.D., RD, LD/N, FAND</a> "For a sweet treat, I'm making brownies filled with antioxidant-rich cocoa powder, cut into small squares. Put a dab of green frosting on top and a brown peanut M&M as a football with a squirt of white frosting for laces!" -- <a href="http://appleadaynutrition.net/blog/">Heidi McIndoo, MS, RD, LDN</a></blockquote> "For dessert, I'll serve fruit skewers with strawberries and blueberries and bite size pieces of brownies." -- <a href="http://rebeccascritchfield.wordpress.com/">Scritchfield</a> "Fruit kabobs." -- <a href="http://appleadaynutrition.net/blog/">Heidi McIndoo, MS, RD, LDN</a>

Cheryl Forberg, R.D., also shared her lightened-up version of some Super Bowl classics. Find her recipe for french onion dip and arugula pesto stuffed mushrooms below:

French Onion Dip
Forberg says, "It takes a little time to simmer the onions, but the result is so worth waiting for. This tastes just like ?the real thing? with a fraction of the calories and fat."

Makes about 3 cups or twelve 1/4 cup servings) Ingredients:

2 1/4 pounds yellow onions, peeled
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon onion powder
4 ounces low fat cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 cup plain nonfat Greek-style yogurt

Instructions:

Cut the onions in half vertically, and then slice them horizontally into 1/8-inch thick half-rounds.
Heat olive oil a large saut? pan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onions and salt. Stir well and saut? for 2 to 3 minutes. Continue to simmer stirring regularly for about 20 to 30 minutes, scraping up any browned bits with a wooden spoon. The onions will be light to medium golden (not dark) browned and caramelized. Cool onions completely.

Place onions in bowl of a food processor. Pulses a few times until onion are slightly chopped. Remove half of the onions and transfer them to a mixing bowl. Return the remaining onions to the food processor. Add the onion powder and process until completely pureed. Add the cream cheese, and yogurt and process just until smooth. Add to the chopped onion mixture . Stir well.
Taste for seasonings. Chill completely. Transfer to serving bowl. Garnish with Italian parsley leaves. Serve with your favorite baked chips.

Arugula Pesto Stuffed Mushrooms
Forberg says: "If you?re a mushroom-lover, you?ll adore this recipe. Try substituting different dried or fresh mushrooms in the filling. Recipe can be prepared in advance for easy entertaining."

Makes 12 stuffed mushrooms

Ingredients:

12 shiitake mushrooms, approx 1-1/2 inches in diameter
1 (1/2 oz. pkg.) dried shiitake mushrooms (or one 1/2 oz pkg. of other dried mushroom)
1 cup roughly chopped fresh brown cremini mushrooms (or other fresh mushroom)
2 ounces (2 bunches) fresh arugula, quickly blanched, cooled and roughly chopped
2 tablespoons walnuts, lightly toasted
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons freshly grated Romano cheese, divided
Salt & freshly ground black pepper

Instructions:

Trim and discard the stem of each shiitake mushroom. Set caps aside.
Place the dried mushrooms in bowl of warm water; press to submerge.
Let stand until the mushrooms are tender, about 20 minutes.

Lift mushrooms from water, being carefully not to stir any sediment that may have sunken to the bottom. Lightly squeeze excess water from mushrooms and roughly chop. Strain mushroom water and reserve for another use.

Combine the dried mushrooms, fresh mushrooms, walnuts, garlic, and arugula in a food processor and pulse a few times until coarsely chopped.

Add oil and 2 tablespoons of the cheese. Pulse just to combine. Transfer to mixing bowl. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. There will be about 1 1/2 cups of filling. It should be just moist enough to stick together but not wet. If not using filling right away, cover tightly with plastic wrap to prevent discoloration. At this point: the recipe can be prepared a day ahead of time and refrigerated up until baking time.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mound 1 tablespoon of filling into each shiitake cap with a spoon, pressing firmly with the inside of the spoon to form a smooth mound. Place stuffed mushroom caps on a baking sheet and sprinkle with remaining tablespoon of cheese. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes until lightly browned. Serve hot or at room temperature.

As America ages, senior care options flourish | Long Island Business ...

Millions of families are beginning to grapple with the one major health expense for which most Americans are not insured: long-term care.

About 10 million seniors currently rely on others for daily care, such as help getting dressed, preparing meals or taking medication. That number will only increase as more of the nation?s 78 million baby boomers enter old age. Nearly 7 in 10 people will need some form of long-term care after turning 65, according to the Georgetown University Public Policy Institute.

?Nobody wants to go to a nursing home, it?s the last resort,? says James Firman, president of the National Council on Aging. ?People want to stay in their own home, and if they can?t, they want to go to a place where they can get assistance but that still feels homelike.?

Nursing homes are the most intensive form of long-term care, including round-the-clock medical supervision. That level of care comes with a steep price tag: the average cost of a semi-private room last year was $81,000, according to a survey by insurance provider MetLife. A private room ran more than $90,500.

Fortunately most seniors won?t require extended nursing home care. Only 5 percent will need five years or more in a nursing home.

Less intensive alternatives include home-care services that offer help with meals and household chores, and boarding houses where a small number of seniors live with on-site caretakers. But like nursing homes, these services aren?t covered by Medicare, the government?s health care plan for seniors, or private health insurance.

?The issue is that these are long-term costs and almost all of it comes out of pocket,? says John Migliaccio, director of research for Metlife?s Mature Market Institute. ?It?s important to have some idea about what it will cost dad, mom or your husband to get the care they need.?

Insurance policies for long-term care are available, but only about 5 percent of U.S. adults have them. Most families don?t plan for long-term care because often the need comes unexpectedly: an elder takes a bad fall or suffers a stroke. Cost is another issue, because policies can run $1,000 to $8,000 a year, depending on the seniors? age, health and other factors.

?The people who can really afford long-term care insurance often have enough fixed income that they don?t really need it,? says Bradley Frigon, vice president of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.

Groups like the National Association for Professional Geriatric Care Managers recommend that families discuss various options for long-term care and how to pay for them ? before they become necessary.

?Once you?re already sick that?s not the time to start changing doctors, moving to a new place and depending on your kids,? says Bunni Dybins, a senior care adviser with LivHome in Los Angeles.

Here?s a quick look at some senior care services to consider:

? MEDICAL ALERT SYSTEMS: Perhaps the cheapest and least intrusive option, seniors can use medical alert systems to get assistance in the event of an emergency. Services like Philips Lifeline and Life Alert consist of a necklace or wristband with an emergency button. When pressed, a dispatcher who has access to the senior?s profile and medical history is called. Depending on the situation he or she will call a neighbor, family member or medical center. Services generally cost between $30 and $50 a month. Some companies also offer extra motion-sensor technology that automatically contacts a dispatcher if it detects the user has fallen. For more, visit: http://www.lifelinesys.com/content/home .

? ADULT DAY CARE: Much like day care for children, adult day care generally operates during business hours Monday through Friday, providing activities and meals for seniors. Perhaps most importantly, these facilities enable caregivers to go to work, run errands or simply take a break.

?Three-fourths of the care people receive in this country comes from spouses, kids and other relatives,? says Firman. ?The challenge there is to make sure those caregivers don?t burn out, and adult day care becomes an important respite during the day.?

Israeli jets bomb military target in Syria

Israel launched a rare airstrike inside Syria, U.S. officials said Wednesday, targeting a convoy believed to contain anti-aircraft weapons bound for Hezbollah militants in Lebanon. The attack adds a potentially flammable new element to tensions already heightened by Syria's civil war.

It was the latest salvo in Israel's long-running effort to disrupt the Shiite militia's quest to build an arsenal capable of defending against Israel's air force and spreading destruction inside the Jewish state.

Regional security officials said the strike, which occurred overnight Tuesday, targeted a site near the Lebanese border, while a Syrian army statement said it destroyed a military research center northwest of the capital, Damascus. They appeared to be referring to the same incident.

U.S. officials said the target was a truck convoy that Israel believed was carrying sophisticated anti-aircraft weapons bound for Hezbollah in Lebanon. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the operation.

Regional officials said the shipment included sophisticated Russian-made SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles, which if acquired by Hezbollah would be "game-changing," enabling the militants to shoot down Israeli jets, helicopters and surveillance drones. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

In a statement, the Syrian military denied the existence of any such shipment and said a scientific research facility outside Damascus was hit by the Israeli warplanes.

The Israeli military declined to comment. However, many in Israel worry that as Syrian President Bashar Assad loses power, he could strike back by transferring chemical or advanced weapons to Hezbollah, which is neighboring Lebanon's most powerful military force and is committed to Israel's destruction.

The airstrike follows decades of enmity between Israel and allies Syria and Hezbollah, which consider the Jewish state their mortal enemy. The situation has been further complicated by the civil war raging in Syria between the Assad regime and rebel brigades seeking his ouster.

The war has sapped Assad's power and threatens to deprive Hezbollah of a key supporter, in addition to its land corridor to Iran. The two countries provide Hezbollah with the bulk of its funding and arms.

A Syrian military statement read aloud on state TV Wednesday said low-flying Israeli jets crossed into Syria over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and bombed a military research center in the area of Jamraya, northwest of Damascus.

The strike destroyed the center and damaged a nearby building, killing two workers and wounding five others, the statement said.

The military denied the existence of any convoy bound for Lebanon, saying the center was responsible for "raising the level of resistance and self-defense" of Syria's military.

"This proves that Israel is the instigator, beneficiary and sometimes executor of the terrorist acts targeting Syria and its people," the statement said.

Israel and Hezbollah fought an inconclusive 34-day war in 2006 that left 1,200 Lebanese and 160 Israelis dead.

While the border has been largely quiet since, the struggle has taken other forms. Hezbollah has accused Israel of assassinating a top commander, and Israel blamed Hezbollah and Iran for a July 2012 attack on Israeli tourists in Bulgaria. In October, Hezbollah launched an Iranian-made reconnaissance drone over Israel, using the incident to brag about its expanding capabilities.

Associated Press writers Lolita C. Baldor and Bradley Klapper in Washington, and Zeina Karam in Beirut contributed to this report.

Appnet gives users 10GB of cloud storage, its File API to set social data free

We thought App.net had eyes only for Twitter when the project was funded and garnered its first 20,000 customers. Today, a post on the company blog reveals that its sights are set much higher than mere messaging. Rather than provide just an ad-free alternative to Twitter, it turns out App.net plans to become a social app platform through its new File API and cloud storage services. The API gives devs the tools needed to build any and all social applications they can dream up -- from photo sharing apps to collaboration tools.

Additionally, App.net is giving annual and dev accounts a 10GB cloud locker. That storage can, in turn, be leveraged for simple file sharing by users and as a repository for social data that can be accessed by apps built with the API. So, photos, messages and other info from an App.net account can be fully controlled by users and can be accessed by any social app they choose. This is a stark contrast to Facebook or Google+, where access to such data is controlled by those companies. Of course, the new platform's only as good as its apps, so interested devs should head on down to the source, grab the API, and get started building the next-gen social network.

Car mirror eliminates 'blind spot,' objects appear as they are

5 hrs.

Labels on side-view mirrors warning drivers that objects are closer than they appear may soon disappear thanks to a new optical prescription for them, according to a new study.

The prescription draws from a technique used to correct for nearsightedness and reduced focusing ability called progressive additive optics. It appears to eliminate blinds spots and make the distance of cars approaching from behind look about as far away as they really are.

The mirror is broken up into three resolution zones: one for distance vision, one for close-up viewing and a middle zone making the transition between the two, according to team member Hocheol Lee from the Hanbat National University in Korea.

?The image a vehicle approaching from behind would only be reduced in the progressive zone in the center while the image sizes in the inner and outer zones are not changed,? Lee said in a news release from the Optical Society.

This video of the progressive mirror demonstrates the accurate depiction of the distance to the approaching car from behind. Notice that the car disappears from the mirror just as it comes into view out the side window???no blind spot.

According to Lee, the mirror isn?t crystal clear, but the slight blurriness and other imperfections are minor tradeoffs for the expanded field of view, more reliable depth perception, and lack of blind spot.

Before the mirrors are available on U.S. cars, the researchers noted the design must first gain approval from auto safety regulators.

For more information, check out the paper on the mirror published Monday in the journal Optics Letters.?

Because the vehicles will be four or five years old by the time our two-year loan ends, we will also be able to observe extended durability and reliability, which is critical to their commercial success.

?Keith Wipke, NREL Laboratory Program Manager for Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Technologies

These vehicles are representative of many fuel cell hybrid designs being proposed by automotive companies today. Toyota plans to introduce a fuel cell hybrid sedan to the US commercial market in 2015.

The vehicles on loan to NREL are fueled with renewable hydrogen made from wind and solar energy thanks to the Wind-to-Hydrogen Project, which uses wind turbines and photovoltaic arrays to power electrolyzer stacks that split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Housed at NREL?s National Wind Technology Center, the Wind-to-Hydrogen Project is funded by the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy?s Fuel Cell Technologies Program.

Ryan says deep budget cuts likely unavoidable

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chairman of the House Budget Committee says Republicans will oppose tax increases and, as a result, deep, unpopular budget cuts will likely take effect.

Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that automatic spending cuts are scheduled to take hold because, quote, "Democrats have opposed our efforts to replace those cuts with others."

Democrats have insisted taxes be part of the equation to dodge across-the-board spending cuts that are set to hit the Pentagon and many domestic programs. The spending cuts were set in motion in the hopes of spurring lawmakers to strike a large-scale deal to reduce the deficit.

Ryan was the 2012 vice presidential nominee. He says the country is heading toward a debt crisis if it doesn't confront its spending.

Police: Brazil nightclub fire kills more than 200

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - At least 200 people were killed in a nightclub fire in southern Brazil on Sunday after a band's pyrotechnics show set the establishment ablaze, local officials said.

Bodies were still being removed from the Kiss nightclub in the southern city of Santa Maria, Major Gerson da Rosa Ferreira, who was leading rescue efforts at the scene for the military police, told Reuters.

Ferreira said 159 bodies had been removed from the club, and the death toll was likely to rise above 200. He said the victims died of asphyxiation or from being trampled, and there were as many as 500 people inside the club when the fire broke out.

Luiza Sousa, a civil police official in Santa Maria, told Reuters the blaze started when a member of the band or its production team ignited a flare, which then set fire to the ceiling. The fire spread "in seconds", Sousa said.

Rio Grande do Sul state Health Secretary Ciro Simoni said respirators from all over the state were being sent to the scene.

Santa Maria is some 187 miles west of the state capital of Porto Alegre. "A sad Sunday!" tweeted Rio Grande do Sul Governor Tarso Genro. He said "all possible measures" were being taken in response and that he was on his way to the scene.

Birth Control Lawsuits: Obama Health Care Mandates Loosen Legal Challenges

NEW YORK -- The legal challenges over religious freedom and the birth control coverage requirement in President Barack Obama's health care overhaul appear to be moving toward the U.S. Supreme Court.

Faith-affiliated charities, hospitals and universities have filed dozens of lawsuits against the mandate, which requires employers to provide insurance that covers contraception for free. However, many for-profit business owners are also suing, claiming a violation of their religious beliefs.

The religious lawsuits have largely stalled, as the Department of Health and Human Services tries to develop an accommodation for faith groups. However, no such offer will be made to individual business owners. And their lawsuits are yielding conflicting rulings in appeals courts around the country.

"The circuits have split. You're getting different, conflicting interpretations of law, so the line of cases will have to go to the Supreme Court, `' said Carl Esbeck, a professor at the University of Missouri Law School who specializes in religious liberty issues.

Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that Obama's fiercely contested health care overhaul, known as the Affordable Care Act, was constitutional. But differences over the birth control provision in the law have yet to be resolved.

Under the requirement, most employers, including faith-affiliated hospitals and nonprofits, have to provide health insurance that includes artificial contraception, including sterilization, as a free preventive service. The goal, in part, is to help women space pregnancies as a way to promote health.

Religious groups who employ and serve people of their own faith ? such as churches ? are exempt. But other religiously affiliated groups, such as Catholic Charities, must comply.

Roman Catholic bishops, evangelicals and some religious leaders who have generally been supportive of Obama's policies have lobbied fiercely for a broader exemption. The Catholic Church prohibits the use of artificial contraception. Evangelicals generally permit the use of birth control, but they object to specific methods such as the morning-after contraceptive pill, which they argue is tantamount to abortion.

Obama promised to change the birth control requirement so insurance companies and not faith-affiliated employers would pay for the coverage, but religious leaders said more changes were needed to make the plan work.

The Health and Human Services Department said it could not comment on litigation. A spokeswoman also did not respond to a question about when the latest revisions in the birth control rule would be made public.

However, government attorneys responding to a lawsuit said an announcement was expected by the end of March. In the suit filed by the evangelical Wheaton College in Illinois and Catholic Belmont Abbey in North Carolina, the court ordered government attorneys to provide a progress report on the new rule every 60 days. Whatever its final form, the mandate will take effect for religious groups in August.

At the center of the cases is the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the 1993 law that bars the government from imposing a substantial burden on the exercise of religion for anything other than a compelling government interest pursued in the least restrictive way. The question of how or whether these criteria apply when owners of for-profit businesses have a religious objection to a government policy hasn't been fully tested.

"It's more natural for people to say Notre Dame exercises religion, but when you say this power tool company exercises religion, you have to explain it little more, I think the claims are really the same," said Kyle Duncan, general counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which represents many of the plaintiffs.

Brigitte Amiri, senior staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union, argued the business owners are trying to use a religious liberty claim to deny benefits to someone else.

"We don't think that religious liberty claims can be used as a way to discriminate against women employees ? using those claims to take away someone else's benefits and services," Amiri said.

In the lawsuits from faith-affiliated groups, such as the University of Notre Dame, judges around the country have generally said it would be premature to decide the legal issues until the federal rule for religiously affiliated organizations is finalized.

In the cases involving business owners, judges have granted temporary injunctions to businesses in nine of 14 cases they've heard, while questions about for-profit employers and religious rights are decided, according to a tally by the Becket Fund.

In a case brought by Cyril and Jane Korte, Catholic owners of Korte & Luitjohan Contractors in Illinois, a three-judge panel granted a temporary injunction, ruling 2-1 that providing employees insurance coverage that includes birth control would violate the Kortes' faith.

"It is a family-run business, and they manage the company in accordance with their religious beliefs," the judges wrote.

The dissenting judge argued that the company will not be paying directly for contraception but instead will purchase insurance that covers a wide range of health care that could include birth control, if the woman decides with her physician that she needs it.

"What the Kortes wish to do is to preemptively declare that their company need not pay for insurance which covers particular types of medical care to which they object," the dissenting judge wrote.

Similar reasoning was used by courts denying an injunction requested by the arts and crafts chain Hobby Lobby and religious book-seller Mardel Inc., which are owned by the same evangelical family. Oklahoma-based Hobby Lobby calls itself a "biblically founded business" and is closed on Sundays.

The U.S. district judge who first considered the request said, "Hobby Lobby and Mardel are not religious organizations."

"Plaintiffs have not cited, and the court has not found, any case concluding that secular, for-profit corporations such as Hobby Lobby and Mardel have a constitutional right to the free exercise of religion," the ruling said.

Try These Magnificent Self Help Tips To Increase Your Confidence ...

Self improvement is when you work to make yourself a better person, and to ultimately improve your life. To reach your goals with personal development, you must educate yourself on how you can make yourself a better person and decide what works for you and what doesn?t. The article you are about to read will give you plenty of tips to get going on your personal development plan.

Most employers will not care what school or college you went to, they will care that you earned the degree and can do the work. Working with large financial institutions or law firms is an exception to this rule. Truthfully, it?s more crucial that you have obtained a degree and expanded your horizons.

Exercise is not only for people wanting to lose weight. There are tons of reasons to exercise. As you work out, your body will release chemicals necessary to relieving your stress.

TIP! Stay around like-minded individuals. This will help you to have a better attitude and maintain it as well as keeping you away from bad people that aren?t behind your dreams and goals.

You can?t change unless you make a directed, continuous effort to do so. It is important to make any changes that are necessary for growth.

You need to be your highest priority since you can?t please everybody. That doesn?t mean you should become selfish, but rather that you take control of your own emotions. You should never sacrifice your beliefs in the search for happiness.

One part of depression you may not thought of to look at is your diet and increasing the amount of complex carbohydrates that you consume. If you are not getting enough complex carbs, you serotonin levels will be low. You can do this by eating more raw veggies, fruits, nuts, brown rice, whole grains and assorted beans.

TIP! Make sure the goals you set for yourself are small and manageable so you can easily achieve them and develop the lifestyle that will make you happy. Figuring out your weaknesses and doing what you can to deal with them will make you a happier, more satisfied person.

Be ready to take down any ideas you may have, no matter what the setting is. Use a notepad app on your phone or even carry a real notepad with you. Just write down what their idea or thought is and then develop it more when you have the time and are feeling creative.

Strengthening your faith and expressing love are two great self improvement goals. You can not have faith without love. Therefore, it is important that you never become complacent in your faithfulness. Put your faith into action by helping others and loving not only your peers, but yourself as well.

Figure out what you want your life to be and do what it takes to accomplish it. If you lay around all day wishing your life was better but not doing anything to make it better, it will never happen. Make your dreams reality by taking decisive action.

TIP! We all make mistakes which includes making poor food choices once in a while. Stress is as bad for your body as a piece of cake, so remember that life is too short to sweat the small stuff.

Leadership is the cornerstone of personal development. Leadership is generally approached as being influential. Reflect back on your leadership experiences. What experiences have had the greatest impact on your life? What changes have occurred thanks to these events? What do you feel makes you a good team player? When you examine these thoughts, you will become more of a team player and leader.

You must understand that a divide exists between where you currently are, and the place you would like to go. This first step can start you on the way to reaching your goals. If you cannot see this discrepancy, it is unlikely that you will reach your highest potential.

TIP! Consider your personal character attributes when determining what you want to change. Your aesthetics can be changed quicker than your personality can! Clothes and looks are no reflection of the true personality of person.

If you suffer from anxiety, try going to see a movie with a friend. You will be out and about but you don?t have to talk a lot or even see who you?re with most of the time. This will give you the chance to get acquainted with the idea of being around more people.

Stress is one of the biggest road blocks to happiness. When the human mind is preoccupied with a state of stress, damage can be caused to both physical and mental aspects of the body. All of us need to have clear, relaxed thinking to enable us to plan and execute our life?s purpose, and this only happens when we let go of stressful thoughts. Allow yourself a set time during each day that you can relax and empty your mind. Taking a little bit of time for yourself will help you stay calm, and keep your goals in mind.

It is important that you feel comfortable using the abilities that you have. Being different isn?t a bad thing, since we all have different strengths and skills, which makes for an interesting world of personalities. Concentrate on good skills you already have rather than worry about talents you would like to acquire.

TIP! Are you experiencing difficulty meeting romantic partners? Think about looking on the Internet. Up to 40% of couples meet over the Internet nowadays.

You need to have an emergency fund. Many people handle every unexpected expense with a credit card, building up debt. If you put back just a few dollars every week you will quickly build up an emergency fund. Having an emergency fund in place can help provide a safety net throughout all the phases of one?s financial life.

Try writing down goals you want to reach if you want to better yourself. For example, should you want a greater amount of confidence, write about it. Then, brainstorm things that you could do or have done that will improve your confidence. Finally, you will need to put yourself in a situation where you can practice being confident. Developing a plan of attack will make it more likely that you succeed.

When you are trying to improve yourself, you should aim to have a high amount of self-discipline. Learn to exercise restraint over the desires of the flesh to achieve a higher level of self control. Overindulgence, overeating, lust, and selfishness are all base impulses that you can overcome. If you can cut out the negative aspects of your personality you?ll find your entire being becomes healthier and happier.

TIP! Choose one element of your life to focus on improving. You may want to improve multiple aspects of yourself, but keeping a narrow focus makes it easier to define and achieve your goals.

Start each morning believing that it will be better that day than it was the day before. Put the effort that is needed to accomplish this. Steady, unending improvement should be your goal. Try your hardest to achieve something different today than what you achieved yesterday.

Your reaction to a situation can determine your level of stress. Acknowledge and manage your stress by carefully analyzing your circumstances. If a mistake is the issue, there are ways to correct it or cope with living with your mistake. Focus more on your accomplishments instead of your failures.

Avoid going shopping as a form of entertainment or comfort. Shopping your stress away, or ?retail therapy? as some people say, is really more of a stress inducer, because it distracts you from the stress for a while but it all comes back with big bills and interest charges when the bills come in.

TIP! Try to make the most of your time at work and get more done. Take an ample amount of breaks when you are working hard.

Don?t just respect people who have power or something to offer you; treat everyone with respect. The way you deal with people speaks volumes about your character.

Leadership is about exercising authority, but good leaders are humble, too. When rebukes are necessary, be gentle yet firm, and keep in mind that you must be able to serve to be able to lead effectively. A real leader models integrity and upholds the appropriate virtues. These qualities are required in order to lead successfully.

Behind every great champion is an equally great coach. It is important to surround yourself with a positive mentor and coach. Everyone should help one another. This is an important strategy for ensuring that everyone is able to achieve their goals. Behind every successful story, there?s a great mentor.

TIP! Do you drink a lot? Do you use tobacco products or any other harmful things? You should treat your body as if it is a temple. One way to improve your life is by getting rid of any bad habits that you have.

Know the obstacles you face before you hit them. This is very hard for many people to do. In order to change problems you are having, you must identify what they are. It?s easier to move forward if you take care of what is standing in your way.

Find books that inspire you. Everyone?s idea of a positive piece of writing is different. It may be a religious bible, or alternatively a book of inspirational quotes. By keeping something around that you can refer to for encouragement, you will be better able to handle all that life throws at you.

Take care of yourself physically to get the most out of your personal development activities. Just simple things, such as exercise, getting enough rest and a proper diet, will all keep your energy level up and make you feel good enough to be successful in your personal development journey. It might seem easy, but it can prove to be very difficult.

TIP! Focus on the things that you have determined are most important to you. Focus on the more positive things in life because they matter.

As was mentioned earlier, self improvement can help you better yourself. Try different things and select the strategies that work best for your situation. Use the advice in the article and you can take the first step in a journey of self improvement.

As you can see, this was a very, very short duel, mainly because it is just to illustrate the workings (and I was dueling myself...) I think the basic system is pretty easy to understand - Changes in LP are always bold, the turn markings are bold, and names of cards in italics. If any questions, feel free to post them here :) Also: leave a message when you are ready to start your own duel, and I'll set up another OOC thread so we can start. I have all the exam decks ready :)

Behind The Dressing Room Door: Anthropologie Product Reviews ...

Good morning everyone and happy Friday! I hope you all have had a fabulous week. I'm so happy that the weekend is finally here. I've had a rough week at work and I'm looking forward to some relaxation this weekend. Last weekend my Mom and I headed to Anthro to do some reviews. This is a small first set, with Round 2 coming soon so stay tuned!

Now on to the reviews...

Here is Maeve's Fetch & Frolic Dress. This dress fits somewhat TTS. I'm wearing a size 0. I would say that small busted girls should consider sizing down as the back is very stretchy and has give. The dress has an adorable dot print in black and white with a contrasting red ribbon which I love. It's a little log for my 5'3'' frame so I would need to get the Petite version. The dress also has pockets (yay) and removable straps.

Back to the rack for now.

Fetch & Frolic Dress
Style# 26527382
Price: $148

Color: DARK GREY
Pros: Somewhat TTS, contrasting bow, pockets, cute pattern
Cons: Length a little long, can size down if smaller busted
Verdict: B+
Must, Lust or Back to the rack: Lusting
Here is the Voksoper Dress. This dress fits pretty TTS. I'm wearing a size 2 here and could easily wear a size 0. This dress is just lovely! I love the white and black sophisticated look of the top paired with the black flowy bottom. The back of the dress is intricate and interesting as well. The length is good for my 5'3'' height as it hits just at the knee. I would like to try the Petite version as I think it would look better slightly shorter.

Lusting.

Pros: TTS, black/white pattern, sophisticated look
Cons: None
Verdict: A
Must, Lust or Back to the rack: Lusting

Here is Bordeaux's Ruched Striped Column Dress.?This dress fits slightly big. I'm wearing an X-Small and it was loose on me. I would consider trying a size down for your normal size as this is pullover style and is stretchy. The dress is extremely flattering and comfortable on. I really love the black and white look as I can see pairing this with some bright red or turquoise heels. The length hits just at my knee which is okay, but I think it would need to be hemmed. The website says there is a Petite length, but I don't see an option for that.

Back to the rack for now.

Here is Ranna Gill's Tropicalia Pleated Maxi Dress. Wow! This dress is just amazing! It fits TTS. I'm wearing a size 0 and it fits like a dream! I love all of the colors, the beautiful painter-like pattern, fit and the detailing on the collar. The length is too long for my 5'3'' frame but they do have a Petite version online. I am going on a Caribbean cruise at the end of March and I think this would be a great dress to wear for one of the formal nights on the cruise.

Purchased a 0P and can't wait to wear it!
