SETI scientist Jill Tarter retires from research to focus on raising funds to continue search for extraterrestrial life

These possibilities could become reality if funding forces the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence to turn off the telescopes and quit searching for the answer to one of humankind?s most profound questions.

Jill Tarter isn?t going to let that happen.

After 35 years of eavesdropping on the stars, hoping to hear the intelligent murmurings of an extraterrestrial civilization, the SETI Institute?s lead alien hunter is hanging up her receiver and retiring as director of the Center for SETI Research.

But she?s not quitting the quest.

Instead of querying the heavens for signs of life, Tarter will query life on Earth for the funds needed to keep Earth?s ears online. ?We?re just going to make this a crusade,? she told me during an interview. (You can read it here.)

Physicist Gerry Harp has taken the reins from Tarter, the SETI Institute announced on May 22. ?It?s been challenging and exciting, a lot of new things to learn, a lot of new meetings to go to,? Harp says of his new role. ?But from what I?m seeing, Jill?s working at least as hard as she ever did before. I think we should acknowledge that she is still very much a part of the program.?

Tarter?s curiosity about life on other worlds erupted in the 1970s, fueled by a serendipitous merging of her ability to program a very old computer (a PDP-8/S ? ?I always thought the ?S? stood for ?stupid,?? she says), with a forward-looking proposal to find out whether other communicating civilizations exist in the galaxy. At the time, Tarter was in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley. ?I couldn?t imagine anything more exciting or rewarding than trying to answer this old question,? Tarter says. ?I got hooked and I stayed hooked.?

In 1984, Tarter and several colleagues founded the SETI Institute, a nonprofit organization that has since grown to include more than a hundred people. Once focused mainly on detecting radio signals from extraterrestrial civilizations, the institute now employs scientists studying many factors important for the existence of alien life ? from Kepler team members who are detecting and characterizing exoplanetary systems, to astrobiologists searching for life in the most extreme environments on Earth and in the solar system?s exotic nooks and crannies.

But the institute needs money to keep searching. Once funded by a fraction of a percentage of NASA?s budget, SETI has relied on private donors to maintain the interstellar dial tone since 1993 ? courtesy of one senator, who killed any substantial SETI funding for the foreseeable future. ?For years, we became the four-letter S-word that you couldn?t actually say at NASA headquarters,? Tarter recalls.

Now, with the Allen Telescope Array ? a SETI array comprising 42 dishes (out of a planned 350) ? that funding is more crucial than ever. Last April, the array went into hibernation after funds dried up. In October, the array returned to operations, propelled by individual donors who contributed more than $200,000. Now, the telescope is under new management by SRI International, and is supported by a contract from the U.S. Air Force that tasks it with searching for orbiting space trash.

Still, 50 percent of the observing time is occupied with SETI searches. ?For SETI, it is the best thing around,? Harp says. ?We have 12 hours a day on this telescope. It?s very difficult to get 12 hours a day on any telescope in the world, and that?s what we have.?

Tarter is hoping to once again tap the enthusiasm of SETI supporters and build a lifeline that will support the search for centuries. ?SETI really is the investment in our future,? she said. ?If we detect a signal, we know we can have a long lifetime.? There will be proof that it is possible to become an old technology. Someone else did it. Therefore, damn it, we can do it.?

Business Diary | Business Networking, Mentoring & Loads Of Press ...

This week I?ve been out networking again, enjoying putting the top down on the car and driving about in the sun, having attended several events organised by the Worthing & Adur Chamber of Commerce.

The first was the monthly ?Peer 2 Peer? mentoring group organised and subsidised by the Chamber and we are at our 3^rd meeting now and the group is beginning to bond, with several joint ventures being created already.? I pretty much know when I walk in a room who I?m going to get on with immediately but there are quieter people who I take a while to get to know and this group is great for that.? We are also starting to feel safe enough to open up a bit.

One of our number volunteered accidentally for what our group facilitator is calling ?Reflective Learning? which is where you present a business issue and get 5 minutes to outline that.? Then we all have resist our usual mode of offering solutions, but try and ask open ended questions designed to get the person in the hot seat to think differently.? Like herding cats that was, but we got there in the end and the victim said it was really helpful, as he?d been avoiding thinking about the issue for a while.

We generally adjourn to the pub (the only time you would catch me in a Weatherspoons ? especially in Worthing) but I have to say, the food was surprisingly good for the price and the great conversations carry on for another hour or so.

The second event was a lunch at Impulse Leisure (previously y Lancing Leisure) which I?ve managed to avoid hitherto but I was again, pleasantly surprised by the large breezy room, pleasant food and the enjoyable company several of my new Chamber maties.

The CEO of the local council Peter Latham was speaking this time and he seemed quite entertaining but once more I found myself challenged by being largely unable to hear more than one word in three.? I had the same issue at the Chamber AGM where Gill Fielding was nearly inaudible in spite of standing in front of a microphone and the presence of some fairly large speakers that certainly were not turned on.? Most mysterious that was.

I must talk to Tina about the Chamber perhaps getting a portable PA system ? like Brighton Chamber has apparently ? that she knows how to use as, when I quizzed my table mates as to whether they were able to hear clearly, they all shook their heads.

Coming up soon is the launch party of The Dome Vintage Tea Room, on June 7^th co-ordinated by Sheryl@WorthingDomeEvents.co.uk if you fancy coming and there is also a Worthing & Adur Chamber Hub event at Shoreham Airport next week which you can attend free I believe.

My old beloved Business Success Factory Moo Cards are out of date, with the wrong phone number and email on them so I can?t use those.? I don?t? like people ringing me out of the blue so I could live with that but the email address being wrong is just out of order.? It?s all down to my vacillating at the beginning about using the .co.uk versus the .com!

That site is all about mentoring nowadays too, which is not the target market for all this networking, so I need Cairncross Media cards now.

This is where I run up against the graphic design conundrum ? which is that I am very fussy with a strong sense of what I want but I find it very difficult to explain what I want and get very impatient with graphic designers who create things that are nothing like the kind of thing I like!

I?m certainly not willing to pay to go through that pain just yet, so I?ve thrown myself on the mercy of my mate Steve who is not only a brilliant WordPress web designer but has a great design eye too.? Steve is my preferred go-to outsourcer for websites for Cairncross Media clients so we all get a great deal there with his unique combo of techie and design skills.

NHL.com reports: Hall of Famer Scotty Bowman was awarded the Order of Canada, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Canadian other than the Queen's Order of Merit, on Friday.

"It's certainly different from my Stanley Cup rings, and I look forward to wearing it on special occasions," Bowman told reporters after the ceremony at Ottawa's Rideau Hall in which he received the red-and-white medallion from Governor General David Johnston.

Bowman is the winningest coach in NHL history, winning nine Stanley Cups. He currently serves as a senior adviser of operations with the Blackhawks under general manager Stan Bowman, his son.

Nokia 808 PureView enables NFC image share, mobile payment apps to come

Rounding off a busy day of shooting with Nokia's new imaging mistress, the company's Vesa Jutila, Head of Symbian Product Marketing, hooked us up with some more developments for the 808 PureView, specifically to do with NFC. He told us that picture sharing would be possible across devices -- not limiting itself to fellow PureView smartphones, and differentiating it from another hotly anticipated future smartphone. We'd err against using it on those full 38- or 34-megapixel images though, as they will often measure over 10MB and it could take some time. Further, Nokia's already applied for Mastercard and Visa accreditation to get those mobile wallets up and working. We're curating our own exclusive image gallery as we speak and they're likely to whet your appetite for more oversampling goodness. Expect a fully-fledged review with a final model in the not-too-distant future.

Leader Impression I7A

The Leader Impression I7A ($179 list) is a budget-friendly way to enjoy a taste of Google's latest "Ice Cream Sandwich," Android OS 4.0. This tablet?is for geeks only, as it's laggy and somewhat unstable, and doesn't support the Google Play app market. But with a sub-$200 price tag, a decent display, and a surprisingly solid metal enclosure, Android geeks may be willing to put up with its stability and performance issues.

Design and Features
The resemblance between the I7A and the original Apple iPad is uncanny, with both featuring brushed metal backs with flattened edges?only the I7A is shrunken down to 7 inches. At 6.73 by 5.19 by 0.45 inches (HWD) and 9.44 ounces, the I7A is comfortable to hold, but a bit odd-shaped compared with most 7-inchers. The Amazon Kindle Fire ($199, 4 stars) is taller and narrower at 7.5 by 4.7 by .45 inches (HWD), and heavier at 14.6 ounces. Despite using the same 16:9 screen aspect ratio as the Kindle Fire, the I7A's body has more of a 4:3 ratio, mimicking the iPad. A hard reset pin hole, micro USB port, mini HDMI port, microSD card slot, and Volume buttons all sit along the top edge. I was easily able to mirror 1080p video onto a large HDTV using an HDMI cable?a nice touch for a budget tablet. The Power button can be found on the left edge, while a Back button can be found on the right. Along the bottom edge is the 3.5mm headphone jack and power port, for charging with the included AC adapter (you can also charge using the included micro USB cable.)?

The I7A uses a 7-inch TFT LCD with 1,024-by-600-pixel resolution, the same resolution found on the Kindle Fire. The screen itself gets relatively bright, with a wide viewing angle and pleasantly saturated colors. Details are generally sharp, though text has a fuzziness to it that strained my eyes after extended use. There is also some uneven lighting around the edges of the screen. The screen is on par with the one found on the Kobo Vox?($199, 2 stars), though the I7A has a wider viewing angle.

This is a Wi-Fi only tablet that connects to 802.11b/g/n networks, but only on the 2.4GHz band. Leader advertises Bluetooth, but I couldn't find any way to connect to devices. A 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera works with Skype calls, but there is no rear-facing camera. Also included in the box is a protective folio case, which feels a bit cheap, but is useful for propping up the I7A on desks.

Hardware, Performance, and OS
The metal chassis gives the I7A a premium feel, but underneath the hood are far more pedestrian components. The I7A is powered by a single-core 1GHz VIMICRO Cortex-A8 processor and 512MB RAM with 4GB of internal storage. Only 2.56GB are available for user data, but storage can be expanded by up to 32GB with a microSD card.

Given the low-end specs, it was no surprise that the I7A's performance struggles. Home screen animations appeared smooth, but touch input itself is often jerky, scrolling is rarely smooth, and precise movements are limited by what seem like click-stop intervals built into the screen. In a game like Angry Birds, instead of having complete control of infinitely variable shooting angles, finger swipes move the aim up or down at small, but noticeably set intervals. Web pages load a bit slowly and app crashes were fairly common. Switching between video playback and other apps often caused some hang-ups. It's not as bad as the Kobo Vox, but nowhere near as smooth and hiccup-free as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0)?($249, 4 stars), which also runs ICS.

While more and more tablets are getting the "Ice Cream Sandwich" treatment, it was still a pleasant surprise to find Google's latest OS running on such an inexpensive tablet. The I7A uses a stock build without heavy skinning, but it lacks Google apps, including the Google Play app market. Instead, the I7A comes with the GetJar app market, which offers a mediocre selection of third-party apps. Some popular apps like Angry Birds and Dolphin HD browser are here, but the selection is a far cry from the Google Play market. I was able to use the Amazon Appstore to download and install apps like Deer Hunter Reloaded. Leader did include an APK installer for side loading apps, but this isn't exactly a user friendly solution. While the I7A is free of bloatware, some of the pre-loaded apps, like the Kobo reader app, do not work at all.

Video playback is smooth, and the I7A can handle MPEG4, H.264, Xvid, and DivX videos at up to 1080p resolution. In our battery test, which loops a video with brightness set to max and Wi-Fi turned on, the I7A lasted only 3 hours, 15 minutes?a good deal shorter than the Kindle Fire's 4 hours, 55 minutes in the same test.

Conclusions
The Leader Impression I7A offers an interesting combination of solid build quality, moderate performance, and the latest Android OS at one of the lowest prices we've seen yet. But it's outside the standard Google realm, which limits its appeal to folks who know what they're doing with Android tablets, and its imprecise touch input and stability issues keep us from recommending it to average consumers.

Tablet buyers on a budget should spend just $20 more for a more stable Kindle Fire, though that doesn't run ICS. On the other hand, it's entirely possible to hack ICS onto the Fire, and if you're shopping for an edgy tablet like the Leader Impression, you very well might be the kind of person with the skills to do so. If you demand a classy Android 4.0 experience out of the box, pony up for the $249 Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), which strikes a great balance between performance, features, and price.?

Yahoo! Makeover Continues With Alibaba Deal

Over the weekend Yahoo! (YHOO) finalized a deal to sell half of its long-standing 40% stake in Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba. The deal is valued at $7.1 billion -- $6.3 billion in cash and $800 million worth of newly minted Alibaba preferred shares.

The deal gives Yahoo! liquidity and a clarified mission, but it comes at a price. Activist investor Daniel Loeb recently cited reports valuing all of Alibaba at $63 billion. If that's in fact the case, Yahoo! just sold $12.6 billion worth of assets at a more than 40% discount.

Yahoo! will also take a tax hit on the agreement that could reduce the net cash the company receives to somewhere in the neighborhood of of $4 billion, according to Kara Swisher at the influential web site AllthingsD.com. As Swisher notes, the price the sides agreed upon values Alibaba at $35 billion, or some $28 billion below the figure Loeb has pointed to.

Whatever the final tally, Yahoo!'s press release says the company "intends to return substantially all of the after tax proceeds to shareholders." Yahoo! increased its share buyback program by $5 billion in the same release.

Any discount the company received was worth it, at least in terms of giving shareholders and employees clarity regarding Yahoo!'s strategy. Interim CEO Ross Levinsohn has been focused on ad sales at Yahoo!, and though he wasn't behind the Alibaba deal (he's been at the post for a week), he was one of Loeb's choices for Yahoo!'s CEO job.

Shares of Yahoo! were more active than normal on the news, with volume an hour into trading heavier than what's recorded on a usual full day. The shares have been between $15.10 and $16 following the Alibaba plan and were recently up 10 cents for the session at $15.52.

BlackBay Group's Todd Schoenberger thinks the sale is an excellent move for Yahoo!, saying it "improves the gravitas of the entire organization." Schoenberger says the success or failure of the deal will ultimately depend on what the company does with the money.

A more aggressive move into media is, in the words of Schoenberger, a "spectacular idea," but it's not Yahoo!'s only play. There are far more interesting options that could be funded by the proceeds of the Alibaba deal, the least compelling of which is a share buyback.

Whatever Yahoo! chooses to be, what it's not is a venture capitalist focused on China. If Yahoo! shares are as undervalued as Loeb suggests, it's a function of the Street not knowing where the company was going as a core business, not the success or failure of Alibaba and the Chinese B2B market.

Between Loeb -- who owns 6% of Yahoo! stock -- getting three board seats, yet another change at the top and the Alibaba deal finally closing, Yahoo! seems to be getting proactive for the first time in years. Add to that the company's decision in April to cut roughly 2,000 jobs as part of its cost-cutting and refocusing efforts, and it's been an extremely busy few weeks for the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company.

To shareholders and employees, any move is better than sitting still.
