Sony Interviews Inafune on Soul Sacrifice for PlayStation Vita

6h ago - Sony Social Media Manager Sid Shuman has shared an interview with Inafune today on the upcoming video game title Soul Sacrifice for PlayStation Vita below.

To quote: In the world of video game development, Keiji Inafune is a giant among men.

The illustrator and former global head of production at Capcom has played a key role in the development of an astounding array of games spanning a diverse lineup of genres, everything from Mega Man to Resident Evil to Lost Planet and many more.

With his new role at Comcept and Intercept, Inafune is expanding his influence to new projects, including the upcoming "dark fantasy" PS Vita title Soul Sacrifice.

During Gamescom last week, we caught up with Inafune to learn more about his ambitious new game that forces players to make painful decisions.

PlayStation.Blog: How do you take something painful - sacrifice - and make it fun in a gameplay setting?

Keiji Inafune: If you hear the word "sacrifice" it obviously sounds painful. But that's because you think of sacrifice as sacrificing yourself.

But when you're playing together with your friends, it could be entertaining because it creates a new dialogue. If my character is dying, and my friend decides to sacrifice me, I might say "hey, what are you doing?! Don't sacrifice me!"

So it creates a reason to come up with new ways to fight. It could lead to different kinds of heroism; you could save a bad situation by sacrificing yourself or a friend, or ask your friend to sacrifice himself for the good of the group. I don't know that it's always "fun," but it's a new kind of entertainment.

You're forced to make choices in this game. Of course you could go through the game making smaller sacrifices - anything you find in nature you can use as offerings, rocks or a rat you find in a field - and you'll get a smaller amount of power. The more you sacrifice, the more power you'll gain. You're the one to make that choice.

PSB: You recently revealed the backstory about one of the game's monsters, the Griffon. When you don't know someone's motivations, it makes it easier to kill them. Do you want us to sympathize with these monsters?

KI: One of the things I want to illustrate is a feeling of guilt, a feeling of complexity. So there is sacrificing, but there is also saving. Those are the two extreme choices, the dilemma that you'll face every time.

I want you to make sacrifices, but I also want you to think about saving. Perhaps you're fighting a powerful enemy but you learn that he has a sick daughter that he has to save back home by earning money in battle. When you hear this during the battle, the nice part of you might think about losing so he can save his daughter. But you want to win your battle, too!

So you'll feel these complex feelings. I wanted to make this a big part of the game. Can you make these extreme choices given the situation?

PSB: Do you think moral ambiguity is something that's missing from video games? Are too many game stories focused on black and white, good versus evil?

KI: I've watched the evolution of games and the games industry for the last 25 years; I've always had a front-row seat. In many modern action games, it's about how realistic you can make the experience, how sensational the action is.

But the creators of the best games today have realized that they need to do something more than becoming more realistic, more sensational - it's probably already hit the ceiling.

They're thinking about creating something new by including that emotional aspect. In thinking globally, in order to compete with the top game creators today, I've also had to think about including that emotional aspect. The games I work on will all include that as a big theme.

PSB: Is there an advantage to sacrificing versus saving? Does your character develop differently?

KI: You've probably heard that you can customize your character, and you'll have a lot of choices and options. But the way you choose to fight will affect your appearance.

So if you keep on saving, or keep on sacrificing, the visual effect will look different; you'll look more angelic if you keep saving, more evil if you keep sacrificing.

If you go towards one extreme or the other, the time will come when it may be difficult to keep on going [in your chosen path]. If it's easier to sacrifice a particular enemy, you might face a difficult decision if you you want to save him.

But you can choose to stick with an extreme approach, and you'll earn more power if you choose the hard way. That might come into effect when you're playing with a party.

PSB: What more can you share about Soul Sacrifice's multiplayer mode? How can the different players work together?

KI: Multiplayer mode is definitely a big part of Soul Sacrifice. It's not just about four people getting together and fighting one monster, though.

You have to be strategic in terms of creating your party and choosing your sorcery. One player might want to be aggressive and fight on the front line, while another might want to save more and heal more. Another player might stop time in order to help the others.

Every party you come up with will have a different strategy, different ways to attack and fight. That's a big element of the game.

PSB: Developers have taken many strategies in creating PS Vita titles, from bite-sized games to home console-style games. What do you think makes the best portable experience?

KI: I was very involved with the Monster Hunter series, one that pioneered multiplayer gaming in a portable device, and I think my experience there will be very valuable as I explore PS Vita's opportunities.

That said, though there are many ways to approach game design I think that real-time online multiplayer is the most fun and exciting, though it can be challenging to create.

In a portable gaming environment, you can't have hours and hours of gameplay - 30 minutes is probably the comfort zone. I like to view it as playing chapter by chapter, as opposed to the whole book. At the end of each chapter, I like to see results.

In Soul Sacrifice, for example, you fight the boss character and at the end of the battle you decide whether to save or sacrifice [and that provides a payoff]. At the end of the game, you'll have a whole "book" of experiences. From my perspective, that approach makes a lot of sense for PS Vita design.

PSB: What more can you tell us about the universe of Soul Sacrifice? What inspirations did you draw from to develop the look and the lore?

KI: You begin Soul Sacrifice as a weak, hopeless human locked up in a mysterious cell waiting to be sacrificed. I wanted to create a dark fantasy world, but it's not about just creating a story.

If your character is placed in a hopeless situation, and you look through his eyes, anything would seem dark and depressing. "Dark fantasy" is a result of the situation you're in.

PSB: You've mentioned that one reason you're making this game is because you made sacrifices in your career. In your life, would you say you've saved more or sacrificed more?

KI: I would say that up until now, I've probably sacrificed more. But I believe I've made those sacrifices in order to earn something back. I want to save people... I want to save a lot of things, moving forward.

How to customize iMessage previews and alerts on your iPhone and iPad

By default, iMessage and SMS messages will show previews and alerts on the Lock screen and Home screen of your iPhone, and iMessage previews and alerts on your iPad and iPhone. If you'd rather keep your messages away from prying eyes, however, and not have previews shown, or if you want to change how your alerts are shown, you can easily do so.

How to turn off iMessage and SMS previews on your iPhone and iPad

By default iOS will show a short preview of your iMessage (or SMS) on both the Lock screen and Home screen. If you'd rather have your notification only show the sender's name, however, you can easily adjust the settings of the Messages app to do so.

  1. Launch the Settings app from your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad Home screen.
  2. iPhone general settings
  3. Tap Notifications and then Messages.
  4. iPhone notification center main
  5. Scroll down to Show Preview.
  6. Toggle the option to Off if you don't want iMessage or SMS previews. That will make sure only the sender's name will show in the notifications.
  7. iPhone turn off iMessage previews

How to turn off message alerts on your iPhone and iPad

If you'd like to additional privacy when it comes to iMessage and SMS, or just want to conserve battery life by minimizing the amounts of alerts you get, the Messages app also allows you to customize the kind of alerts you receive and how often for both iPhone and iPad.

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. iPad general settings
  3. Tap Notifications and then Messages.
  4. Under the Alert Style section you can change the type of notification alerts you receive. For maximum privacy you can completely disable alerts by selecting None.
  5. iPad edit messages alert style

Changes will affect both iMessages and regular SMS messages. Even though you turned off the alert notification, unless you disable sound separately, a tone will still play, however, no alerts will pop up.

Not only will this add more privacy but it'll maximize battery life by not waking up the screen every time you receive an iMessage or SMS.

Group: More implied nudity on broadcast TV

NEW YORK (AP) ? A watchdog group says broadcast television is implying a lot more nudity in prime time than it used to.

The Parents Television Council said Monday that its researchers found 76 instances where a person appeared nude, with private parts obscured, in prime time last season. It happened on 37 different shows.

The group says that's a sharp rise from the 15 instances the networks aired the previous season.

Examples include a couple skinny-dipping on "The Bachelor," Howie Mandel jokingly appearing nude in his dressing room at "America's Got Talent" and a naked man jumping out of a car trunk in the candid camera show "Betty White's Off Their Rockers."

In each case, the full nudity is obscured by pixilation or strategically placed objects.

Peyton Manning points the finger at himself

By ARNIE STAPLETON

AP Pro Football Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:12 p.m. ET Aug. 20, 2012

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - He's shown plenty of arm strength and an ability to bounce back after a hard hit. Now, Peyton Manning and the rest of the Denver Broncos' sputtering offense need to work out the kinks.

In seven drives with Manning under center, they've scored just one touchdown and turned the ball over four times.

The good news is that it's the offense that's flimsy, not his neck or arm.

Manning is deciphering defenses as well as ever, getting the ball out as quickly as he always has and he almost always makes the right read. He's completed 67 percent of his passes and the Broncos (No. 10 in the AP Pro32) are moving the chains better than they ever did with Tim Tebow.

Yet, there's lots of work to do.

Dems slam Paul Ryan over Social Security privatization

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats are eagerly renewing their fight against privatizing Social Security now that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked Paul Ryan as his running mate. It was a fight that didn't go well for the GOP when President George W. Bush pushed the idea in 2005.

In his 2010 "Road Map for America's Future," the Wisconsin congressman proposed a plan to allow younger workers to divert more than one-third of their Social Security taxes into personal accounts that they would own and could will to their heirs.

Ryan wrote that the accounts would provide workers an opportunity "to build a significant nest egg for retirement that far exceeds what the current program can provide." Workers 55 and older would stay in the current system.

Romney hasn't embraced the proposal and Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, didn't include it in either of the federal budgets passed by House Republicans the past two years. But now that Ryan is running for vice president, Democrats hope to capitalize on the issue.

Bush's proposal for private accounts received a chilly reception from members in both parties in Congress, though Ryan embraced it. Democrats used the issue against GOP congressional candidates in the 2006 election, when they regained control of the House and Senate.

"The very last thing we ought to be doing is putting at risk the retirement security of millions of America's seniors," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, who heads the Democratic National Committee.

Until now, Social Security had been largely absent from the presidential campaign. President Barack Obama has yet to lay out a detailed plan for addressing the issue, and his silence is drawing criticism from advocates who supported him in the past. Romney has been more forthcoming with proposals, but Social Security has not been a big part of his campaign, either.

Romney, in his book, "No Apology," said he liked the idea of personal accounts. But, he wrote, "Given the volatility of investment values that we have just experienced, I would prefer that individual accounts were added to Social Security, not diverted from it, and that they were voluntary."

Romney's current plan for Social Security doesn't mention personal accounts. Instead, he proposes a gradual increase in the retirement age to account for growing life expectancy. For future generations, Romney would slow the growth of benefits "for those with higher incomes."

Romney says tax increases should be off the table, and current beneficiaries and those near retirement should be spared from cuts.

"Mitt Romney and Paul support gradual reforms to Social Security that protect current beneficiaries from any benefit disruptions while strengthening the program to ensure that it doesn't go bankrupt," Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams said.

The trustees who oversee Social Security say the trust funds that support the program will run dry in 2033. At that point, Social Security will generate only enough tax revenue to pay about 75 percent of benefits, triggering automatic cuts unless Congress acts.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama said he wanted to improve Social Security's finances by applying the payroll tax to annual wages above $250,000. It is now limited to wages below $110,100, a level that increases with inflation.

Obama also pledged to oppose raising the retirement age or reducing annual cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs. "Let me be clear, I will not do either," Obama said at the time.

Last year, however, Obama put on the table a proposal to reduce annual COLAs during deficit-reduction talks with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. The talks ultimately failed and nothing came of the proposal, but it raised questions about whether Obama would honor his 2008 pledge.

"A national politician would do well to strongly identify themselves with Social Security, not just with rhetoric, but to be very clear that they understand the pain people are experiencing today, that they stand behind this program and they will protect the citizenry and they will not cut benefits," said Eric Kingson, a Syracuse University professor who co-founded Social Security Works. "I hope to hear that from the White House. I have not heard that yet."

Obama offered some principles to strengthen Social Security in his 2011 State of the Union address.

"We must do it without putting at risk current retirees, the most vulnerable or people with disabilities, without slashing benefits for future generations and without subjecting Americans' guaranteed retirement income to the whims of the stock market," Obama said in the speech.

Last week, Vice President Joe Biden made a more sweeping guarantee during a campaign swing in southern Virginia, telling a customer at a diner that Social Security will not be changed.

"I guarantee you, flat guarantee you, there will be no changes in Social Security," Biden told the customer, according to a White House pool report. "I flat guarantee you."

A Biden adviser said later the vice president was merely reassuring the woman that her benefits would not be changed. The adviser spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the issue.

Obama campaign spokesman Adam Fetcher said the president "has put forward a set of principles to guide bipartisan action to strengthen it for future generations. Rather than laying the groundwork for a bipartisan approach as the president has done, Mitt Romney's only solution would mean deep benefit cuts for future retirees. His running mate, Paul Ryan was an architect of privatization."

Romney's campaign chided Obama's inaction.

"His failure to lead on entitlements has put the future of Social Security at risk," said Williams, the Romney spokesman. "Mitt Romney is committed to ensuring that Social Security is there for future generations and he has a comprehensive plan to save Social Security with commonsense reforms."

Swiftboating Obama, Giving Romney Cancer | The Moderate Voice

Like pork factories that use every part of a pig but the squeal, Romney and Obama supporters are scraping the bottom of the political trough.

A smear group headed by a former Bushie and Tea Party compatriots is running ?educational? ads denouncing the President for ?recklessly leaking information? about the raids that killed Osama bin Laden.

Swiftboat, anyone? The tactic that torpedoed John Kerry in 2004 now has Barack Obama in its crosshairs. If you have an opponent who served his country honorably, do what Karl Rove did then: trot out veterans to discredit him while your own man?s shortcomings go unnoticed.

Ironically, the commercials come right after an HBO ?Newsroom? episode highlighting how tightly news of the bin Laden raid was controlled until the White House announced it that Sunday night. But in this kind of campaign warfare, facts don?t matter.

Respected Washington Post columnist Dan Balz observes that ?all restraints are gone, the guardrails have disappeared and there is no incentive for anyone to hold back. The other guy does it, so we?re going to do it, too?

?Neither side has had to look far for an excuse to attack or cry foul. Obama?s allies took the campaign over the edge last week and his team did nothing to stop it. The most egregious example of a campaign out of bounds was an ad prepared by Priorities USA, a super PAC supporting the president.

Editor?s note from Dr. E, managing editor TMV: For those who may not be familiar with the SEALS, how they are trained and for what kinds of deployments/ actions:

The SEAL acronym stands for Sea, Air, and Land, which identifies the elements in which they operate. SEALs work in small units ? often one to two men, but sometimes in a platoon comprised of up to 16.

They are trained to perform specific tasks under any type of circumstance and in any environment. Their training takes place in the desert, the jungle, in extreme hot and cold weather, and in urban areas.

SEAL mis sions require detailed planning and precise execution. SEALs are trained to perform missions that fall into five main categories:

Unconventional Warfare (UW) ? Using guerilla warfare tactics in battle. Guerilla warfare is characterized by small, mobile combat groups that operate using often ?unorthodox? battle methods like destroying enemy supplies, creating diversions, ambushing small enemy units, demolitions, and other ?hit and run? types of operations.

Foreign Internal Defense (FID) ? Training given to foreign nationals in order to build relationships. During Operation Desert Storm, Navy SEALs trained 13 Kuwaiti operators in maritime infiltration techniques in order to set up a secret meeting with local resistance contacts within Iraq-occupied Kuwait City.

Direct Action (DA) ? Moving against an enemy target. This may include assaults on land- or water-based targets, hostage rescues, ambushes, etc.

Counterterrorism (CT) ? Includes direct action against terrorist operations, antiterrorist actions for preventing terrorist acts, and protecting citizens and troops.

Special Reconnaissance (SR) ? Includes conducting preliminary surveys to gather information, manning observation posts, and other types of surveillance, both overt and covert, where the goal is to gather information. This may include gathering hydrographic data (beach and water surveys) for landings or following an enemy unit and reporting its position.

When SEALs aren?t deployed, they?re in training, both to hone basic skills and to learn new skills and techniques that will make a difference when they are deployed.

The above categories overlap when it comes to actual missions, but these are the basis of SEAL training: to be expert in the skills required to perform these various tasks.

Coach: Florida Gators can win with either quarterback

Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel are the same. The competition between the two Florida sophomore quarterbacks is dead-even. There has been no separation, and the Gators can win with either one.

That has been the message from coach Will Muschamp, other members of the staff and the players, dating all the way back to spring practice.

But the reality is that a decision must be made at some point.

Brissett, the West Palm Beach Dwyer product, got the first leg up in the competition when Driskel sustained a bruise to his shoulder and missed practice Monday.

Instead of Driskel getting necessary reps in new offensive coordinator Brent Pease?s complex offense, Brissett took the bulk of the snaps.

?When you get more reps you know it?s going to make you better naturally because you?re seeing more things,? Pease said.

Driskel returned to practice Tuesday and has been receiving the same amount of reps as before the shoulder injury.

Pease would not say there has been any separation between the two, adding that the battle has been back and forth and both need to continue to progress before a decision can be made.

?It?s been up and down,? he said. ?They both have gotten better in all aspects of their game, and that?s the main thing. If they can get better to where they both can manage and make plays, then that?s really what we?re striving for.?

Muschamp said both quarterbacks did positive things in UF?s team scrimmage last week, pointing out that each managed the huddle and the pre-snap adjustments well.

But pocket presence and learning when to get rid of the ball when faced with a negative play remain issues.

When it comes to choosing between the two, players have toed the company line in interviews, redirecting questions to Muschamp or simply saying that both are good enough to win with. Although the situation could naturally create a division in the locker room, Pease said there hasn?t been any of that so far.

?The players are about team,? he said. ?This isn?t a buddy contest here. There?s nothing to speak on that. They understand this is about the team.?

Even the quarterbacks themselves have only positive things to say about the other.

Brissett, at UF?s media day, said, ?Both of us can win a national championship with this offense.?

Said Driskel: ?Two talented guys are going to compete against each other and always try to get better. It?s been good for the whole team.?

Driskel and Brissett were both highly touted recruits who played as freshmen last season, and coaches insist their attributes are similar enough that hardly anything changes with the offense from one to the other. So, then, how will a decision be made?

With similar skill sets, presence in the huddle, managing the clock and making proper decisions with the ball are all that separate the two.

Muschamp said last week he wants to see how those things develop through at least three scrimmages before thinking about making a decision.

The first was last Saturday. Another happened Friday, with two more scheduled before Florida opens the season against Bowling Green on Sept.?1.

Pease said Friday that the process for choosing between the two will come down to a discussion between himself and Muschamp.

?I give him my feedback on how guys perform, and I think as a head coach, he?s always watching and evaluating from really a defensive standpoint,? Pease said.

But just as Muschamp controls the public message concerning UF?s most important position battle, he also has the final say.

?I think it?s a 50-50 deal,? Pease said before backing off a bit. ?It?s probably a little bit more of a 51-49 his decision. He?s the head coach.?

Zoologger: Cultured killer whales learn by copying

Zoologger is our weekly column highlighting extraordinary animals ? and occasionally other organisms ? from around the world

Species: Orcinus orca
Habitat: throughout the world's oceans ? humans are the only mammal to range further

Big and strong predators are dangerous enough, but clever ones are the worst. There's nothing more annoying than realising you've been outwitted in the seconds before you're disembowelled.

Killer whales are some of the smartest predators on Earth. They can climb onto beaches to catch sea lions, stun fish by slapping them with their tails, and create waves to knock seals off ice floes.

That might be because they learn from each other. They are one of the few animals that can imitate behaviours that they haven't seen before, and they are ferociously quick students.

See more in our gallery: "Marine lessons in becoming a killer"

Whaling on seals

Despite their name, killer whales are actually dolphins ? albeit rather large ones. Populations in different areas are quite dissimilar, and genetic evidence suggests that there are actually several species.

A key difference between populations is that they target different prey, using different techniques. In the Crozet Islands in the Indian Ocean, whales strand themselves on beaches to hunt southern elephant seals. In Patagonia, they hunt sea lions in the same way.

Beaching oneself on purpose is unusual, and it takes young killer whales years to get the hang of it. Even at five or six years old, they often need their mothers' help to get back off the beach.

Around the Antarctic Peninsula, Weddell seals are the prey of choice. These often rest on ice floes, so the whales form teams up to seven strong and swim towards the ice floe, beating their flukes. This creates a large wave, which can tip up the ice floe and topple the seal into the water.

Killer whales off Norway have a totally different approach. They herd herring into densely-packed balls. Ordinarily this protects the fish as it makes it hard to pick out individuals to target, but the whales get around this defence mechanism by slapping the ball with their tails, stunning some of the fish.

Do what I do

These different styles of hunting could well be cultural: learned behaviours that are shared by members of a single killer whale population. Jos? Abramson of the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain and colleagues have found that captive killer whales are excellent at imitating each other.

They studied three killer whales living in an aquarium in France. In each test, they instructed one of the whales to imitate an action that another was performing. Each whale learned the "do that" command within 20 attempts.

Once the whales knew what "do that" meant, Abramson instructed them to imitate 15 behaviours that they already knew, such as slapping the water with their pectoral fins. They were also asked to imitate four that they had never seen or attempted before, such as barrel rolls. The whales took no more than eight attempts to imitate a familiar behaviour, and even the new behaviours never took more than 16 tries.

That's impressive, but Abramson's whales might not be representative. Their trainers have taught them lots of tricks, so they may be unusually good learners. Such "genius" animal behaviour can be misleading.

Nevertheless, the whales' imitative skills could help explain why different groups use such varied strategies. As soon as one whale develops a new hunting technique, the others will quickly pick it up. If that's what's going on, killer whales join bottlenose dolphins in a small group of marine mammals that have cultural traditions.

Bobbi Kristina Doubts Father Can "Rise Above" Alcoholism

Bobby Brown has checked into rehab to deal with a reliance on alcohol. Good, encouraging news, right?

Not so much, says Bobbi Kristina Brown.

Bobbi Kristina Twit Pic

Brown's 18-year old daughter, who skipped out on her dad's recent wedding and is considering a name change, was asked about her father's attempts to get clean and whether she's proud of him for "rising above" his substance abuse issues.

"Rise above' is not the word you should use," Bobbi told TMZ in response to the question. "Not at all."

Ouch. Brown checked into a facility this week, following a March arrest for DUI and years worth of constant drinking. Bobbi doesn't think it will make a difference.

Let's hope he proves her wrong.

Debate joined on Medicare; Romney, Obama go at it

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama in person and in TV advertising Tuesday of cutting Medicare "to pay for Obamacare," launching a strong counterattack to Democratic charges that he and running mate Paul Ryan would radically remake the popular health care program that serves tens of millions of seniors.

The charge drew a blistering response from Obama's campaign, which labeled the ad dishonest and hypocritical.

Obama "has taken $716 billion out of the Medicare trust fund. He's raided that trust fund," Romney said at a campaign stop in Beallsville, Ohio, as he neared the end of a multi-state bus trip punctuated by his weekend selection of a ticket mate.

"And you know what he did with it? He's used it to pay for Obamacare, a risky, unproven, federal takeover of health care. And If I'm president of the United States, we're putting the $716 billion back," he said.

Aides said a commercial containing the same allegation would begin airing immediately in several battleground states, although they declined to provide details.

In a campaign without summer doldrums, the rival sets of ticket mates campaigned in a half-dozen of the most hotly contested states, in settings as diverse as a coal mine in Ohio (Romney); a wind farm in Iowa (Obama) and a casino in Nevada (Ryan.)

Vice President Joe Biden stirred controversy in Virginia when he said the Republicans would favor the big banks over the interests of consumers. He said Romney has said he is "going to let the big banks once again write their own rules. Unchain Wall Street."

Hundreds of black voters were in the audience that Biden told, "They're going to put y'all back in chains."

Romney's campaign reacted strongly to that, saying the comments were "not acceptable in our political discourse and demonstrate yet again that the Obama campaign will say and do anything to win this election." Biden later conceded using the wrong word but dismissed the Republican criticism and did not apologize.

At a speech closing his bus tour, Romney delivered a sweeping indictment of Obama's campaign. "Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago," he said in Chillicothe, Ohio, insisting that Obama had abandoned his 2008 campaign's messages of hope and change. The Obama campaign said Romney's comments seemed "unhinged."

The tempest over Biden's remark was modest compared to the building struggle over Medicare.

Romney's criticism on that subject appeared an attempt to gain some measure of control over an issue likely to play a significant role in the outcome of the election. Florida, Pennsylvania and Iowa are among the top five states in the country in the percentage of people 65 and over, and all three are battleground states.

In a rebuttal issued shortly after the Romney TV ad was released, Obama spokeswoman Lis Smith said the president's health care law did not "cut a single guaranteed Medicare benefit, and Mitt Romney embraced the very same savings when he promised he'd sign Paul Ryan's budget. ...The truth is that the Romney-Ryan budget would end Medicare as we know it."

In the days leading to Ryan's selection, opinion polls generally showed a close race with Obama holding a modest advantage despite a sluggish economy and unemployment of 8.3 percent. Romney's pick for a running mate drew enthusiastic support from conservatives pleased that he had tapped a lawmaker known as an intellectual leader of the effort to rein in big government benefit programs and reduce future deficits.

But Democrats, too, said they were happy with the selection. They have quickly set out to draw attention to Ryan's plans, which contain deep cuts in projected spending in social programs as well as changes to Medicare for future retirees, and to try and saddle Romney with their political ownership.

Polling generally shows that the public places more trust in Democrats' ability to handle Medicare than they do Republicans, and that people also generally oppose plans to replace the current program with one in which future seniors receive a fixed amount of money from the government to be used to purchase health coverage.

At the same time, polling shows the public strongly believes the financial security of Medicare as well as Social Security must be guaranteed for the long term, and government reports for years have warned of a looming shortfall if something isn't done to change course.

Ryan and Romney have both cited a desire to right the program's finances as a motive for their plans.

Moreover, Romney's attack during the day suggests he hopes to overcome a generic Republican disadvantage on the issue by telling voters that Obama has cut spending for a program that is overwhelmingly popular, and put the money toward one that is controversial.

"So now the money you paid for your guaranteed health care is going for a massive new government program that's not for you," says the announcer in the ad, referring to the health care law that Obama signed into law in 2010. "The Romney-Ryan plan protects Medicare benefits for today's seniors and strengthens the plan for the next generation," the ad concludes.

Ryan, interviewed on Fox News Channel, said he and Romney believe Medicare can be a winning issue for Republicans in the fall. "Absolutely, because we're the ones who are offering a plan to save Medicare, to protect Medicare, to strengthen Medicare," he said.

Ryan didn't say so, but the budgets he has written in the House both called for leaving in place the cuts to Medicare that he is now criticizing. Romney has consistently favored restoring the funds, and his running mate said, "I joined the Romney ticket."

Romney decided to go on the attack on one issue as the president's re-election campaign sharply criticized him on another.

"Romney's plans would cut college aid for nearly 10 million students ... and eliminate the tax deduction for college tuition," says a new television commercial that Obama's re-election campaign said would run in several battleground states. The commercial cites estimates from the budgets that Ryan has prepared as chairman of the House Budget Committee, and Romney's own proposals.

Obama and Romney clashed over yet a third issue during the day, laying out different views on energy policy.

The president taunted his challenger for opposing an extension of a tax break for wind production, quoting him as once having said, "You can't drive a car with a windmill on it. ..."

"I don't know if he's actually tried that. I know he's had other things on his car," Obama joked, referring to the often-repeated tale of a Romney family road trip with their dog, Seamus, in a carrier strapped to the roof of the car.

Government estimates say that more than 6,000 jobs statewide and 20 percent of Iowa's electricity needs come from wind power, and the state's senior GOP leaders all support renewing an extension of a wind tax credit that Romney opposes.

The wind tax provision is one of dozens of credits that would be renewed in legislation making its way to the Senate floor, including several that deal with energy such as of biodiesel, geothermal, biomass and hydropower.

Romney's campaign did not respond to repeated quests for his position on the other portions of the bill, which includes items such as a tax break for developers of NASCAR facilities and purchasers of electric motorcycles.

The former Massachusetts governor sounded eager to challenge Obama's energy policy as he campaigned in coal country in southeastern Ohio. Accusing the president of waging a war on coal, he said Obama favors production of energy that comes only "from above the ground," a reference to wind power and other alternative sources.

"I'm for all of the above whether it comes from above the ground or below the ground," he said.

Mediterranean diet enriched with olive oil may protect bone

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? A study to be published in the Endocrine Society?s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM) shows consumption of a Mediterranean diet enriched with olive oil for two years is associated with increased serum osteocalcin concentrations, suggesting a protective effect on bone.

Age-related bone mass loss and decreased bone strength affects women and men alike are an important determinant of osteoporosis and fracture risk. Studies have shown that the incidence of osteoporosis in Europe is lower in the Mediterranean basin. The traditional Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, with a high intake of olives and olive oil could be one of the environmental factors underlying this difference.

?The intake of olive oil has been related to the prevention of osteoporosis in experimental and in vitro models,? said Jos? Manuel Fern?ndez-Real, MD, PhD, of Hospital Dr. Josep Trueta in Girona, Spain and lead author of the study. ?This is the first randomized study which demonstrates that olive oil preserves bone, at least as inferred by circulating bone markers, in humans.?

The participants in this study were 127 community-dwelling men aged 55 to 80 years randomly selected from one of the Prevencion con Dieta Mediterranea (PREDIMED) study centers who had at least two years of follow-up. The PREDIMED study is a large, parallel group, randomized, controlled trial aimed to assess the effect of the Mediterranean diet on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

For this study, subjects were elderly without prior cardiovascular disease but having a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or harboring at least three cardiovascular risk factors, namely hypertension, dyslipidemia, or a family history of premature cardiovascular disease. Participants were randomly assigned to three intervention groups: Mediterranean diet with mixed nuts, Mediterranean diet with virgin olive oil, and a low-fat diet.

Biochemical measurements of osteocalcin, glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides were performed at baseline and after two year follow-up on fasting blood samples. Researchers found that only consumption of the Mediterranean diet with olive oil was associated with a significant increase in the concentrations of total osteocalcin and other bone formation markers. There were also no significant changes in serum calcium in subjects taking olive oil whereas serum calcium decreased significantly in the other two groups.

?It?s important to note that circulating osteocalcin was associated with preserved insulin secretion in subjects taking olive oil,? added Fern?ndez-Real. ?Osteocalcin has also been described to increase insulin secretion in experimental models.?

Other researchers who helped with the study included M?nica Bull?, Jos? Maria Moreno-Navarrete, Wifredo Ricart, Emilio Ros, Ramon Estruch, and Jordi Salas-Salvad? of Instituto de Salud Carlos III in Madrid, Spain.

The article, ?A Mediterranean Diet Enriched with Olive Oil is Associated with Higher Serum Total Osteocalcin Levels in Elderly Men at High Cardiovascular Risk,? will appear in the October 2012 issue of JCEM.
