Are old photos of Martin, Zimmerman deceptive?

Reuters and AP

An undated photo released by the Martin family public relations representative shows Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed at age 17. George Zimmerman, right, is pictured in this 2005 police photo taken after the now-28-year-old allegedly assaulted an officer. The charge was later dropped.

By The Associated Press

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- When he was shot, Trayvon Martin was not the baby-faced boy in the photo that has been on front pages across the country. And George Zimmerman wasn't the beefy-looking figure in the widely published mugshot.

Both photos are a few years old and no longer entirely accurate. Yet they may have helped shape initial public perceptions of the deadly shooting.

NBC's Michael Isikoff reports on George Zimmerman's arrest at an Orlando bar, where he allegedly interfered with a law enforcement official investigating underage alcohol sales.

"When you have such a lopsided visual comparison, it just stands to reason that people would rush to judgment," said Kenny Irby, who teaches visual journalism at the Poynter Institute, a journalism think tank in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The most widely seen picture of Martin, released by his family, was evidently taken a few years ago and shows a smiling, round-cheeked youngster in a red T-shirt. But at his death, Martin was 17 years old, around 6 feet tall and, according to his family's attorney, about 140 pounds.

Trayvon Martin case: Mayor says police resisted release of 911 tapes

Zimmerman, 28, is best known from a 7-year-old booking photo of an apparently heavyset figure with an imposing stare, pierced ear and facial hair, the orange collar of his jail uniform visible. The picture, released by police following the deadly shooting, was taken after Zimmerman's 2005 arrest on an assault-on-an-officer charge that was eventually dropped.

In a police video made public this week of Zimmerman being brought in for questioning a half-hour after the shooting, the 5-foot-9 man appears much slimmer.

In a case that has caused a nationwide furor over race and the laws of self-defense, Martin was shot to death by Zimmerman in the city of Sanford on Feb. 26 as the unarmed black teenager was walking back from a convenience store.

George Zimmerman, the man who shot Trayvon Martin, had gotten into an altercation with an officer several years ago. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer whose father is white and whose mother is Hispanic, has claimed self-defense, saying he opened fire after Martin punched him in the face, knocked him to the ground and began slamming his head on the sidewalk.

Black leaders and others are demanding Zimmerman's arrest on murder or manslaughter charges, but state and federal authorities are still investigating.

Betsi Grabe, a professor at Indiana University-Bloomington who has studied the effect of news images on public opinion, said photos that gain the most traction play into the desires of both journalists and the public for a story with a distinct victim and aggressor.

theGrio: Trayvon Martin's parents must grieve in the spotlight

"At the center of most stories we tell in our society, cross-culturally and across the centuries, is the struggle between good and evil," she said. "If the ingredients are there, that is what journalists will grab onto and present."

Grabe said it is natural to present the most innocent-looking image of the person believed to be the victim, and the most menacing one of the suspect.

A more complex portrait of the two figures has emerged since then. A photo of a beaming Zimmerman looking sharp in a jacket and tie has come out, along with a more recent picture of Martin, with gold teeth and a white sleeveless undershirt. At the same time, it was learned that Martin had been suspended from school for marijuana residue in his backpack.

George Zimmerman's brother spoke out for the first time Thursday night, defending his brother's actions in the killing of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin and saying that medical records will back his account of the shooting. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

The Associated Press has not been able to verify the sources or creators of what are purported to be more recent photographs of Martin circulating online and elsewhere. The family's attorney has not released the photos.

"Everyone's views seem to be gyrating back and forth with each new scrap of evidence that comes out," said David O. Markus, a prominent Miami defense attorney. "This is why we have courts and juries, and why the process is slow. No one should rush to judgment."

Gordon Coonfield, a communications professor at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, said the early perceptions of Zimmerman as a vigilante may ultimately have no bearing on the case.

He cited the case of Rodney King, the black motorist beaten two decades ago by white Los Angeles police officers in an episode captured on video. The officers were acquitted in state court, though two were later found guilty on federal charges.

"I think the nation felt quite certain it saw the truth of what happened to Rodney King, and the DA tried the case as if the images spoke for themselves," Coonfield said. "Yet the state criminal court decided the images were not self-evidently true. The defense won by offering a more convincing explanation of the images, focusing on what could not be seen - officers' motives, reasoning, and judgment."

Israeli-American Accelerator UpWest Labs Graduates Its First Batch Of Startups

screen-shot-2012-02-07-at-12-49-35-pm2When it comes to countries with thriving startup ecosystems, Israel ranks among the best. With nearly 5,000 startups currently in business -- second only to the U.S. -- the country's pool of entrepreneurial talent has been attracting Western businesses and entrepreneurs for years. But, in January, Gil Ben-Artzy and Shuly Galili launched a startup accelerator that aims to reverse this trend in favor of Israeli entrepreneurs, by bringing the country's promising founders to Silicon Valley to help them kick start their businesses. And, today, after 10 weeks of mentoring, networking, and iterating, UpWest Labs is revealing the six graduates of its inaugural batch.

Experts from across the world recently reported about the emerging health benefits and other aspects of chocolate - the food that has delighted people for almost 2,000 years.

"Chocolate is one of the foods with the greatest appeal to the general population," said Sunil Kochhar, Ph.D., one of the symposium participants at at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

"The luscious aroma, taste and textures of chocolate have delighted the senses of people in many parts of the world for centuries and make it a well-known comfort food."

Kochhar, who is with the Nestle Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, is noted for landmark research that is helping to establish chocolate's potential health benefits.

He described one study, for instance, detailing the biochemical basis for chocolate's reputation as a comfort food.

The study, which included 30 healthy adults, found that eating about an ounce and a half of dark chocolate per day reduced levels of stress hormones and other indicators of emotional anxiety in people who felt stressed-out.

"The flavonoids and other ingredients in chocolate with beneficial health effects originate in cocoa," Kochhar explained.

"In making chocolate, cocoa seeds undergo natural fermentation before being processed into key ingredients for making chocolate - namely cocoa fat and cocoa powder."

Among other presentations at the symposium, scientists reported about how the introduction of new varieties of the cacao tree that resist "witch's broom," a fungal disease that has decimated some crops, may affect the taste of cocoa and chocolate.

That chocolate may be useful in treating of diseases involving disorders of the trigeminal nerve, including migraine and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.

The study found evidence that cocoa contains biologically active ingredients that soothe the nerve's excitability, a probable cause of these disorders.

Findings about the biological basis of chocolate's anti-inflammatory effects. Its rich content of polyphenols inhibit secretion of certain enzymes into the small intestine that cause inflammation.

How chocolate may be helpful in fighting cardiovascular problems for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Flavonoids in the chocolate strengthen mitochondria, the powerhouse of body cells, which are in a weakened condition in patients with cardiovascular problems.

On chocolate and high blood pressure. They found that flavonoids in chocolate lower blood pressure and thus might help in reducing heart disease risks.

A cocoa-rich diet may reduce the risk of colon cancer by preventing undesirable changes in the cells or destroying cells that form precancerous lesions.

That epicatechin, a beneficial antioxidant especially rich in dark chocolate, strengthens cell membranes and offers protection from some forms of cardiovascular disease.

Feeding chocolate to animals in laboratory experiments helped protect their livers from damage that can lead to liver disease.

Chocolate consumption may be especially beneficial for cigarette smokers. Polyphenols in the dark chocolate act on blood platelets to prevent clot formation.

House ready to OK GOP budget, rejects rival plans

(AP) ? Republicans are ready to ram through the House an election-year, $3.5 trillion budget that showcases their deficit-cutting plan for revamping Medicare and slicing everything from food stamps to transportation while rejecting President Barack Obama's call to raise taxes on the rich.

The blueprint by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., was headed for all but certain House passage Thursday, mostly along party lines. It faces a demise that is just as sure in the Democratic-run Senate, which plans to ignore it, but the battle remains significant because of the clarity with which it contrasts the two parties' budgetary visions for voters.

Republicans were focused on sharper deficit reduction and starkly less government than Democrats wanted and were proposing to lower income tax rates while erasing many unspecified tax breaks. Obama and Democrats were ready to boost taxes on families making above $250,000 and on oil and gas companies, add spending for roads and schools and cull more modest savings from domestic programs.

"They're choosing the next election over the next generation," Ryan said, deriding Democrats' plans as far too timid. He added, "If we don't tackle these fiscal problems soon, they're going to tackle us as a country."

Democrats said they, too, were eager to stanch deficits that now exceed $1 trillion annually. But they said it needed to be done in a more balanced way, with rich and poor alike sharing the load.

"It's a path to greater prosperity ? if you're already wealthy," said Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, top Democrat on the Budget panel, mocking the "Path to Prosperity" title Ryan has given his document. "Because our Republican colleagues refuse to ask millionaires to contribute one cent to deficit reduction, they hit everyone and everything else."

In a pair of preliminary votes expected Thursday, conservatives were offering their own proposal with deeper spending cuts and far faster deficit-reduction than the GOP plan, claiming to balance the budget in just five years. Democrats were pushing a measure featuring pumped-up spending for education and new tax credits for companies creating jobs and raising wages, while claiming savings from winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, government waste and reductions in farm payments.

Both were destined to be defeated.

Underscoring the prickly partisan gulf over how to tackle the budget's drastic imbalances, the House late Wednesday on a 382-38 vote easily shot down a compromise, bipartisan deficit-cutting plan by moderates of both parties that mingled tax increases with spending cuts.

The measure was modeled roughly on a package produced by Obama's deficit-reduction commission. The commission's plan drew praise from prominent deficit foes but was treated coolly by Obama and congressional leaders of both parties.

The House also voted 414-0 Wednesday to reject Obama's budget, with Democrats accusing the GOP of forcing the vote to embarrass them. Democrats were concerned Republicans would use campaign ads to link Democrats who supported Obama's plan to all of its details, including tax increases and boosts for unpopular programs.

Congress' budget is a nonbinding road map that suggests tax and spending changes that lawmakers should make in separate, later legislation.

Particularly with voters deciding control of the White House and the Capitol in November, the two parties are sure to stalemate each other's budgetary priorities until after the election.

The House GOP budget would cut spending by $5.3 trillion more over the next decade than Obama's would ? out of more than $40 trillion that would still be spent during that period. It envisions repeal of the president's health care overhaul and sets a course for deep reductions for highway and rail projects, research and aid to college students and farmers while easing planned defense cuts.

It also would cut taxes by $2 trillion more than the president over that time, leaving Republicans seeking about $3.3 trillion in deeper deficit reduction than Obama.

Drawing the most political heat was Ryan's plan for Medicare, the $500 billion-a-year health insurance program for older Americans that all agree is growing so fast that its future financing is shaky. Both parties know that seniors vote in high numbers and care passionately about the program.

Republicans would leave the plan alone for retirees and those near retirement, letting the government continue paying much of their doctors' and hospital bills.

For younger people, Medicare would be reshaped into a voucher-like system in which the government would subsidize people's health care costs, which Republicans say would drive down federal costs by giving seniors a menu of options that would compete with each other. Democrats say government payments won't keep up with the rapid inflation of medical costs, leaving many beneficiaries struggling to afford the care they need.

"It ends the Medicare guarantee," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said of Ryan's budget.

"This plan doesn't end the Medicare guarantee," said Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz. "Arithmetic does. Unless we change something, unless we put it on a solvent footing, the Medicare guarantee is gone."

Republicans would turn Medicaid, the nearly $300 billion-a-year federal-state health insurance program for the poor, into a grant that states could use as they wish. They also would trim its growth by $800 billion over the next decade.

Pakistan Taliban Training Frenchmen, Officials Say

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan ? Dozens of French Muslims are training with the Taliban in northwestern Pakistan, raising fears of future attacks following the shooting deaths of seven people in southern France allegedly by a man who spent time in the region, Pakistani intelligence officials said Saturday.

Authorities are investigating whether Mohamed Merah, the Frenchman of Algerian descent who is suspected of killing three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three French paratroopers in Toulouse this month, was among the training group, the officials said.

Merah was killed in a dramatic gunfight with police Thursday after a 32-hour standoff at his Toulouse apartment. The 23-year-old former auto body worker traveled twice to Afghanistan in 2010 and to Pakistan in 2011, and said he trained with al-Qaida in the Pakistani militant stronghold of Waziristan.

Approximately 85 Frenchmen have been training with the Pakistani Taliban in the North Waziristan tribal area for the past three years, according to the intelligence officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. Most of the men have dual nationality with France and North African countries.

The Frenchmen operate under the name Jihad-e-Islami and are being trained to use explosives and other weapons at camps near the town of Miran Shah and in the Datta Khel area, the officials said. They are led by a French commander who goes by the name Abu Tarek. Five of the men returned to France in January 2011 to find new recruits, according to the officials. It's unclear whether Merah was among that group.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy promised a crackdown on French citizens found to have trained in terror camps abroad.

"Anyone who goes abroad to follow ideological courses that lead to terrorism will be criminally punished. The response will be prison," he said in a campaign speech Saturday.

A senior French official close to the investigation into the shootings told The Associated Press on Friday that despite Merah's claims of al-Qaida links, there was no sign he had "trained or been in contact with organized groups or jihadists."

A militant commander, Ahmed Marwat, claimed in a phone call with the AP on Saturday that Merah was affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban in Waziristan, but provided no details. Marwat said he was part of the Jundullah wing of the Pakistani Taliban.

The claim could not be independently verified.

The Pakistani Taliban, which is closely allied with al-Qaida, has carried out hundreds of attacks in Pakistan over the past several years that have killed thousands of people. Taliban leaders say they want to oust the U.S.-backed government and install a hardline Islamist regime. They also have international jihadi ambitions and trained the Pakistani-American who tried to detonate a car bomb in New York City's Times Square in 2010.

The main sanctuary for the Pakistani Taliban is the restive tribal region along the Afghan border, especially North and South Waziristan. Despite a large military offensive in South Waziristan in 2009, the government has very little control over the area.

Western officials have been concerned for years about Muslim militants with European citizenship visiting northwestern Pakistan, possibly training for missions that could include terror attacks in Europe where they would act as "lone wolves" or on the orders of others. In 2010 alone, dozens were believed to be there.

Merah told police during the standoff that he was trained "by a single person" when he was in Waziristan, not in a training center, so as not to be singled out because he spoke French," the director of the DCRI intelligence service, Bernard Squarcini, told the Le Monde newspaper.

Merah was questioned by French intelligence officers last November after his second trip to Afghanistan, and was cooperative and provided a USB key with tourist-like photos of his trip, the French official close to the investigation told the AP.

While he was under surveillance last year, Merah was never seen contacting any radicals and went to nightclubs, not mosques, the official said. People who knew him confirmed that he was at a nightclub in recent weeks.

Merah told negotiators during the police standoff that he was able to buy a large arsenal of weapons thanks to years of petty theft, the official said.

French prosecutors said Merah filmed himself carrying out the three shooting attacks in Toulouse that began March 11.

Scientists identify new mechanism of prostate cancer cell metabolism

Study results are published in Cancer Discovery, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Almut Schulze, Ph.D., a group leader in the Gene Expression Analysis Laboratory at Cancer Research U.K., and colleagues analyzed three metastatic prostate cancer cell lines and compared those findings with those of a nonmalignant prostate epithelial cell line.

"Cancer metabolism is a new and emerging target that can be exploited as a potential therapeutic, and our study identified one of the components for the growth of these cancer cells," she said.

The researchers analyzed the effects of gene silencing of 222 metabolic enzymes, transporters and regulators on the survival of the cell lines.

"This approach revealed a significant complexity in the metabolic requirements of prostate cancer cells and identified genes selectively required for their survival," said Schulze.

Researchers determined that the gene PFKFB4 was vital in many of these processes. Specifically, it was required to balance glycolytic activity and antioxidant production to maintain cellular redox balance in the cancer cells. When levels of this gene were depleted in laboratory models, tumor growth was inhibited. Higher levels of this gene were found in the metastatic prostate cancer cell lines.

Schulze concluded that this gene is required for tumor growth and thus could be manipulated with targeted therapies. Although this study was confined to prostate cancer, she believes the findings could be applicable in other cancers as well.

Mercury: Unusual insides and active history

New information collected by NASA's Messenger shows that Mercury was more geologically active than scientists previously thought.

The small, sun-scorched planet Mercury has an interior unlike that of any other rocky planet in our solar system and a surprisingly dynamic history, two new studies suggest.

Using observations from?NASA's Messenger spacecraft?in orbit around Mercury, researchers have found that the planet's huge iron core is even larger than they had thought, and it's likely overlain with a solid shell of iron and sulfur ? a layered structure not known to exist on Earth, Venus or Mars. And there's more: Mercury appears to have remained geologically active for a surprisingly large chunk of its evolutionary history, researchers said.

"Many scientists expected Mercury, being a small planet only slightly larger than the moon, to have cooled off not long after it formed and to be?essentially 'dead' for most of its evolution," said Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, lead author of one of the new studies and a co-author on the other. "But it appears that Mercury had an exciting and active?middle age."

Mercury from above

The $446 million Messenger (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) spacecraft launched in 2004. It then took a circuitous route to the solar system's innermost planet, becoming the first probe ever to orbit Mercury in March 2011. [Latest Mercury Photos from Messenger]

Since then, Messenger has been zipping around the baking-hot planet ? which orbits the sun from just 36 million miles (58 million kilometers) away, compared to 93 million miles (150 million km) for Earth ? once every 12 hours.

The probe is mapping Mercury's surface?and gathering data on the planet's composition, magnetic environment and tenuous atmosphere, among other features. To date, Messenger has taken nearly 100,000 images and made more than 4 million measurements of the planet's surface, researchers said.

Messenger's original science campaign was designed to last one Earth year, but NASA announced in November that it had granted the spacecraft a one-year mission extension. Messenger officially began its extended mission?earlier this week.

Surprising findings

The two new studies, which both appear in the March 23 issue of the journal Science, detail findings that should help scientists better understand Mercury's murky past.

In one study, researchers used observations made by Messenger's laser altimeter to map the topography of Mercury's northern hemisphere. They found that the range of elevations was smaller than that found on either Mars or the moon.

FACT CHECK: More US drilling didn't drop gas price

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's the political cure-all for high gas prices: Drill here, drill now. But more U.S. drilling has not changed how deeply the gas pump drills into your wallet, math and history show.

A statistical analysis of 36 years of monthly, inflation-adjusted gasoline prices and U.S. domestic oil production by The Associated Press shows no statistical correlation between how much oil comes out of U.S. wells and the price at the pump.

If more domestic oil drilling worked as politicians say, you'd now be paying about $2 a gallon for gasoline. Instead, you're paying the highest prices ever for March.

Political rhetoric about the blame over gas prices and the power to change them ? whether Republican claims now or Democrats' charges four years ago ? is not supported by cold, hard figures. And that's especially true about oil drilling in the U.S. More oil production in the United States does not mean consistently lower prices at the pump.

Sometimes prices increase as American drilling ramps up. That's what has happened in the past three years. Since February 2009, U.S. oil production has increased 15 percent when seasonally adjusted. Prices in those three years went from $2.07 per gallon to $3.58. It was a case of drilling more and paying much more.

U.S. oil production is back to the same level it was in March 2003, when gas cost $2.10 per gallon when adjusted for inflation. But that's not what prices are now.

That's because oil is a global commodity and U.S. production has only a tiny influence on supply. Factors far beyond the control of a nation or a president dictate the price of gasoline.

When you put the inflation-adjusted price of gas on the same chart as U.S. oil production since 1976, the numbers sometimes go in the same direction, sometimes in opposite directions. If drilling for more oil meant lower prices, the lines on the chart would consistently go in opposite directions. A basic statistical measure of correlation found no link between the two, and outside statistical experts confirmed those calculations.

"Drill, baby, drill has nothing to do with it," said Judith Dwarkin, chief energy economist at ITG investment research. Two other energy economists said the same thing and experts in the field have been making that observation for decades.

The statistics directly contradict the title of GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's 2008 book "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less," as well as the campaign-trail claims from the GOP presidential candidates.

Earlier this month, GOP front-runner Mitt Romney said of his solution to higher gas prices: "I can cut through the baloney ... and just tell him, 'Mr. President, open up drilling in the Gulf, open up drilling in ANWR (the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge). Open up drilling in continental shelf, drill in North Dakota, drill in Oklahoma and Texas.'"

On Wednesday, with President Barack Obama traveling to oil and gas production fields on federal lands, Crossroads GPS, a nonprofit arm of a super PAC supporting GOP candidates, released a new ad to air in the same states that Obama was visiting. It accused Obama of restricting oil development in America and concludes "bad energy policies mean energy prices we can't afford."

The late 1980s and 1990s show exactly how domestic drilling is not related to gas prices.

Seasonally adjusted U.S. oil production dropped steadily from February 1986 until three years ago. But starting in March 1986, inflation-adjusted gas prices fell below the $2-a-gallon mark and stayed there for most of the rest of the 1980s and 1990s. Production between 1986 and 1999 dropped by nearly one-third. If the drill-now theory were correct, prices should have soared. Instead they went down by nearly a dollar.

The AP analysis used Energy Department figures for regular unleaded gas prices adjusted for inflation to 2012 dollars, oil production and oil demand. The figures go back to January 1976, the earliest the Energy Department keeps figures on unleaded gas prices. Phil Hanser, an economist and statistician at the energy consulting firm The Brattle Group; University of South Carolina statistics professor John Grego; New York University statistics professor Edward Melnick and David Peterson, a retired Duke University statistics professor, looked at the analysis, ran their own calculations, including several complicated formulas, and came to the same conclusion.

When U.S. production goes up, the price of gas "is certainly not going down," Melnick said. "The data does not suggest that whatsoever."

The calculations "help make the point that U.S. production and demand have little to do with the price of gasoline in the U.S., and lend support to the notion that there is not a great deal we in the U.S., acting alone, can do to affect the price of gasoline," Peterson wrote in an email. He pointed out that Energy Department figures show that gas prices in the U.S. seem to rise and fall similarly to gas prices in Europe, showing that it has little to do with American drilling.

And that's the key. It's a world market, economists say.

Unlike natural gas or electricity, the United States alone does not have the power to change the supply-and-demand equation in the world oil market, said Christopher Knittel, a professor of energy economics at MIT. American oil production is about 11 percent of the world's output, so even if the U.S. were to increase its oil production by 50 percent ? that is more than drilling in the Arctic, increased public-lands and offshore drilling, and the Canadian pipeline would provide ? it would at most cut gas prices by 10 percent.

"There are not many markets where the United States can't impose its will on market outcomes," Knittel said. "This is one we can't, and it's hard for the average American to understand that and it's easy for politicians to feed off that."

If drilling activity rises around the globe for a sustained period of time, gasoline prices can fall as that new supply eventually finds its way to market, but the U.S. can't do it alone, oil analysts say.

Politicians ? especially those in the party that's not occupying the White House ? have long harped on high gas prices when expedient. Then-Sen. Barack Obama said in 2008, when he was running for president, that "here in Ohio, you're paying nearly $3.70 a gallon for gas, 2-1/2 times what it cost when George Bush took office."

But Obama, who has seen gas prices go up 73 percent since he took office, was singing a different tune last week in his weekly radio address: "The truth is: The price of gas depends on a lot of factors that are often beyond our control. Unrest in the Middle East can tighten global oil supply. Growing nations like China or India adding cars to the road increases demand. But one thing we should control is fraud and manipulation that can cause prices to spike even further."

The political party of the president doesn't seem to matter to the price at the pump either. Since 1976, the average monthly gas price, adjusted for inflation, during Democratic presidencies has been $2.25; under Republicans it's been $2.34. Obama had the steepest monthly average at $3.05 and Bill Clinton the cheapest at $1.68.

When Bush and running mate Dick Cheney campaigned in 2000, they argued that as oil executives they could get oil prices down, with Bush saying, "I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply."

Yet it was during the last few months of Bush's term in 2008 that gas prices hit their highest: $4.27 when adjusted for inflation.

reframing business ethics | constructivist consulting

At a Tate symposium this weekend on the artist and immaterial labour, Stefano Harney from Queen Mary (University of London) startled the arts audience by proposing that management was the prime example of immaterial labour, citing its focus on harnessing such ineffable things as motivation, enthusiasm and even passion.? Always pleased to experience a provocative reframing, I recognised his name from a recent article in The Independent: What should an MBA look like after the crisis?

He wrote: ?The impoverishment of society is not an ethical issue alone, it is an analytical issue, and one business leaders are already proving they do not understand. Because society is not just the beneficiary but the generator of business wealth, and to beggar it is, sooner or later, to beggar business.? But of course this is not what the MBA teaches. It may teach beneficence, but it does not teach mutual dependence. Business is very well understood as the producer of wealth, but very badly understood as dependent on an educated, healthy, creative, and happy society. Business may help to create these conditions, but such conditions equally make business possible. They are more than resources. They are sources. It is not a question of businesses giving back to society. It is a question of giving back what was borrowed. And at the moment, it is business that is in default?.

Under these conditions he proposes that we shift the question to what an MBA should look like now, in the midst of the crisis, suggesting that it should ?lead students back to this mutual relationship, not away to the business-class lounge? and would mean ?not standing apart from the crowd when the deal goes bad, but embracing, like a real leader, the full social and environmental consequences of one?s actions?.

A refreshing and challenging alternative to the glib ?green shoots? rhetoric dominating the business press.

Richard Skipper Celebrates...: Terese Genecco!

?I never worked a day in my life.? I?ve been very lucky.? I wake up every day and they pay me to write music.? ~ Russell Garcia at age 95

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
?Today I am writing about one of my favorite entertainers. She packs more excitement into a one hour performance than a five hour parade!
If you don't know her, you should! I first became familiar with Terese Genecco because of a show she was doing in San Francisco celebrating Frances Faye.?
?Being a huge Frances Faye fan definitely put Terese on my radar. She was getting quite the buzz in California. I couldn't wait for her to bring this show to New York. Eventually, she did.
The truth is the show was even greater than the hype eluded to...if that is even possible. I became in a moment a Terese Genecco fan.?
She was very smart to have a vehicle such as Francis Faye to bring her the recognition she deserves.
She didn't rest on those laurels. Three years ago, Scott Barbarino of the Iridium to do a series of shows the last Tuesday night of each month.?
That was a great move for all involved!
This Tuesday night, as Terese has done for the last three years, Terese will be doing two shows 8 and 10 PM.?
However, this Tuesday night will be a very special occasion.?
She will be celebrating the release of a long overdue new CD recorded Live at The Iridium. This is her second CD.?

I will be there and I cannot wait. As I said earlier, and I cannot say it enough, I am a fan! IF you don't know Terese, this blog is for you. IF you know Terese, you might find something new today! I hope you enjoy my celebration of Terese Genecco!
Lets go back to the beginning:

Terese's first, big, live concert memory is being at the Rochester War Memorial stadium in upstate NY with her older brother for a Beach Boys concert.? She was shocked that her parents let her go to a huge concert stadium in ?the big city? with just her brother Steve as her ?adult supervision.?? He actually took very good care of her and it was a wonderful experience.? She very clearly remembers batting hundreds of beach balls around throughout the crowd all night long while listening to the guys sing their beautiful four part harmonies in their Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops.? But the moment that stopped her dead in her tracks was when Brian Wilson sat down at a white grand piano in the middle of the stage, wearing all white, and he played and sang ?In My Room.?? You could hear a pin drop.? The spot light was the only light in the room (except for a few lighters being waved in the crowd and an exit sign here and there) and Terese remembers thinking, ?That?s what I want to do someday.?

I asked Terese how she manages her own expectations in this business.?
What does SHE do to see them through. Terese says she thinks she is supremely lucky because her expectations have never been very high!? ?
When she first started singing again (She took quite a hiatus following her college years in the Syracuse University musical theater department), She joined a cabaret competition in San Francisco just for the fun of it.? ?
Four months later, she won the

whole thing.? Kevin Dozier, who had just won the award for Best Male Professional Artist was standing next to her comparing their rather unattractive trophies (Terese's for Best Debut Artist) when the producer announced the name of the overall winner of the entire competition, the ?Entertainer Of The Year? and it was Terese.?

?It didn?t even register.? Kevin had to tell her, ?YOU WON!? and push her towards the podium to accept the award.? She has taken one step at a time ever since then and has never expected anything to come to her without a bazillion hours of hard work and focus.? Her father taught her a long time ago that nobody gets anything they wish for but they sometimes DO get the things they work for?if they?re lucky!

During that hiatus mentioned above, Terese had a lucrative and successful career as a commercial insurance sales executive in California.? She worked as a lead producer/presenter on multi-million dollar deals in boardrooms of major corporations with CEOs and CFOs sometimes triple her age and experience.?

What she learned was that hard work, knowledge, expertise, creativity, talent and personality can get just about any deal done but the bottom line is that people like to buy from someone they LIKE.? Why would they give their hard-earned dollars to a jerk?? They don?t want to.? So for Terese, she learned that being good at her job and being a nice person was the perfect combination for success and it made HER feel good too. She also learned to walk away from deals that didn?t feel right.? No matter how much money an account was worth, if the people on the team she would have to work with in the years to follow weren?t a good fit for her, she walked away from the table and moved on to the people who were fun and easy to do business with.? She's still that way today. She won?t sing for inattentive or unappreciative audiences and she won?t have long-term relationships with people she doesn't like or can?t respect.? She tries to surround herself with people who have a similar work ethic and who treat their business associates and artists with a high degree of respect.?

Terese had an amazing musical education as a child.? She won't speak directly to the state of arts in education today because she is not a parent nor is she personally involved in a public or private school system.? From what she hears from friends and through the media, however, it?s heartbreaking that the funding and formal in-school training is all but gone.? She can?t imagine her school years devoid of art classes, chorus, concert band, orchestra, private music lessons, marching band, jazz band, field band, theory, and dance lessons? she took them all in addition to all of the sports she was allowed to play.? But she doesn't believe in doom and gloom.? So many people are chipping in and doing what they can to keep the arts healthy and vibrant and growing through new generations.? One musician she knows (Doug Beavers) started an after school program in Harlem to teach kids how to play instruments and make recordings.? He brought Shaynee Rainbolt in this year to teach voice to a select group of those kids.? There?s Michael Estwanik and the American SongbookProject and so many other great teachers and programs finding private funding to keep music and art and theater and film studies available for kids who have a desire and aptitude for artistic education at a pre-college level.? Raissa Katona Bennett said to Terese the other day, ?What is the one thing that has survived throughout the history of

mankind?? The arts.? And she?s right.? Music and theater and visual arts and storytelling have been woven throughout the fabric of history and humanity and it will always be a part of our personal, spiritual, and social lives.? We are not in danger of losing it.? We ARE in danger of having fewer experts in the field.

Have you ever felt like you were born in the wrong era? What other period of time do you relate to and why?

?1962, Baby.? That swingin? Rat Pack, Bobby Darin, Louis Prima, Frances Faye heyday in the lounges and supper clubs of Las Vegas.? I probably would have enjoyed the late 1920?s and early 1930s speakeasies in New York as well, when Frances Faye got her start along side of Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby and that gang.? I?m singing in a basement jazz club now, come to think of it, and booze isn?t that hard to find there!

Your thoughts on Carol Channing (All my blogs focus on Carol Channing?s Foundation For The Arts)? I?m campaigning for Carol Channing to receive the 2012 Kennedy Center Honor in 2012. If you agree that she should receive this honor, can you say why you think this should happen (See below on how YOU can help!) I grew up watching the great musical ladies of stage and screen and listening to Broadway show soundtrack albums on Sunday mornings with my Mom.? Hello, Dolly! was in constant rotation and Ms. Channing was one of my very early idols.? I never imagined growing up to ?be like her? but I did want to grow up to maybe someday ?work with her.?? I?m one degree of separation away from that goal via my friend Richard Skipper and through my new friend Eric Kunze (Broadway?s Miss Saigon, Les Miz) who was just on stage with Ms. Channing a few nights before her darling husband, Dr. Harry, passed away.? I heard it was a magical night for everyone on stage, in the audience, and behind the scenes.? I treasure our musical theater legends as well as the jazz greats who came before us to pave the way.? Last summer, as I sat across from the legendary Russell Garcia at his dining room table in Kerikeri, New Zealand and asked him endless questions about working with the greatest singers and musicians of the 20th Century, he laughed and asked me why I wanted to hear those old stories!? I reminded him that from 1930 to 1960, some of the greatest music the world has ever known was created right here in this country and that he was in the thick of it and a part of its creation.? How could I not ask him to share his experiences and insight with us?? He smiled? then thought back to those experiences and those people? and he said, ?Yeah.? They were great.? Those were good times but we?re having fun making music now too.?

?

Most recent appearance

I sing all around NYC whenever possible but my regularly scheduled shows with my 8-piece ?little big band? happen on the 3rd or last Tuesday of every month.? We?re very excited to be ?the longest-running nightclub act on Broadway!?? There?s my marketing hat going on!

Next appearance

?It?s my 3 Year Anniversary of monthly performances at The Iridium AND my CD release concerts!? We recorded the shows live on October 12, 2011 and we?re putting out our 2nd CD that night!? I say ?our? because I feel really connected to ?my little big band.?? These are the top musicians in all of NYC, which means they?re some of the best musicians in the world!? A few of them come and go as they all have their own careers.?

What is your biggest success in Show Business?

It depends on your definition of success but to me, every milestone has been an amazing experience along the road TO success. I?m very happy to be ?the longest-running nightclub act on Broadway? going in to my 4th year of performances at The Iridium in NYC but every moment that came before, leading up to this, has been instrumental in my development as an entertainer. I do have to add that there was one particular moment that gave me chills. I had been booked to play The Peppermill Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada a few years ago. I was still living in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time and I loved that drive up Highway 80 toward Lake Tahoe so I packed up the car and headed off on my own for the gig. I had put together a ?little big band? entirely from the old pros that lived in Reno and had played for all the greats as they made their way through town in the heyday. We were to rehearse the next afternoon and then play two shows on Saturday night together. It was a gorgeous, sunny day and a beautiful drive up into the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I pulled into downtown Reno and made my way up the road to the casino. As I sat in the turn lane in front of the hotel waiting to turn left into the main entrance, I saw the huge Peppermill marquis in front of me with changing banners and flashing lights. Paul Anka was appearing in the ?big room? that weekend and his face took up almost the entire billboard. The next thing I saw was MY press photo with my name and the announcement that I?d be appearing with my ?little big band!? That was an awesome moment. It felt very much like I had gone back in time but also that I had somehow ?arrived? and was about to make my mark. The band was great and so was the crowd. We had a blast that weekend. I went outside every couple of hours and looked at that giant neon billboard and giggled. I completely channeled Sammy Davis, Jr. at The Sahara that night!

?

What was your lowest low and how did you surpass that?

?It wasn?t that long ago, actually!? Every now and then, when the deadlines are looming and the sales and marketing and business responsibilities far outweigh the making of music, it?s hard to keep focused on the ?fun? part of being an entertainer.? The stress can be overwhelming and there is always that nagging voice inside saying ?No one cares.? Why do you even bother??? When that happens, I talk to my fianc? about it and we try to come up with a game plan that helps me get through the next phase and back on course.?

What one change would you like to see in today?s industry?

?I would put an end to every single music-related competition on the planet.? Singing, dancing, and acting are not competitive sports!? These are talents that are to be nurtured and guided until the artist emerges, eventually fully formed, with a clear command of his or her instrument, body, or voice and can completely engage with an audience at a professional level.? Amateurs should be allowed the time and the space to practice and train and grow into artists but they should do so with the guidance of their mentors, coaches, and teachers ? not on television in front of millions of ?judges.?? What does my Uncle Vince know about vocal range, vibrato, registers, acting, and lyric interpretation?? Why does he get to decide if I go onto the next level of my career or not?? I don?t sit at home and judge what plumber gets to keep working as a plumber based on a television show that sets him up against other plumbers!? It?s ridiculous that an entire generation of entertainers is being trained to win competitions, not learn their craft as artists.

Do you consider what you wear on stage for your show a costume? Or is it just clothing to you?

A little bit of both.? I have to be comfortable on stage in order to really give my best performance.? If I look in the mirror before I go on and do a ?thumbs up?, it?s going to be a good show.? If I?m tugging at a collar or pulling at something that doesn?t feel right, it?s going to be a distraction.

Are you happy at the point you are right now in your career?

?I?m happy at every point I have been in my career!? As long as I?m continuing to work and grow as an artist and entertainer and I keep getting work, I?m happy!

Do you feel you have achieved what you set out to do?

No, not yet.? There?s a long, long way to go!

What do you do to remain positive when life's hiccups get you down?

?I try to keep an eye on the bigger picture ? I?m a singer.? I?m not curing cancer.? Although, studies show that music does have healing qualities, so you never know!? But reminding yourself daily about the really important things in life keeps it all in perspective.? I?m like a dog with a bone when I have a goal in front of me but I still try to remember that life is truly short and that none of us gets out alive.? Live every day to the fullest, go to bed tired, get some rest, get up and live the next day to the fullest, rinse, and repeat!

How on earth do you reach theatre-goers now that newspapers are obsolete and there are so many channels on TV you can?t pick the right ones to advertise on and with the web being so hit and miss.

?I think most of the people who come specifically to see and hear me sing are people who I have met somewhere else or who have seen me sing one or two songs at another event and want to see what I do with my band for an entire show.? I do a TON of social media marketing (Facebook, Twitter, email, websites, group marketing, etc.) and I make an effort to maintain contact with people who I have identified as allies and supporters who like to turn people on to my shows.? One fan brings a friend who becomes a fan who brings two friends to the next show and so on.? We have been building audience like this for three years and we?re still going strong.? I also think that advertising is a huge part of a marketing strategy.? Also, working with a publicist who has garnered respect with the media is often instrumental in getting the right critics to see your work at the right time.? Changing things up for every performance is also important to get audience to come back again and again.? Every show is a unique experience with that particular audience on that particular night with those particular musicians on stage with me.? I also think it helps to think outside the box when it comes to sales and marketing.? We have some really cool ideas for grabbing attention from the general public to bring awareness about my shows.

A genie pops out of the lamp, he grants you three wishes. What are those wishes?

?I?m going for musical wishes but that doesn?t mean I wouldn?t first wish for world peace, an end to hunger and starvation, and end to global warming, ending the war on terror, the war on drugs, the for-profit prison system, cruelty to other species, and all that we humans do that is out of concert with nature and our best selves.? That said, here are my three ?dream come true? moments!

1)?? Spend a day in time hanging out with the Rat Pack AND Frances Faye and then all play a sold-out show together at The Sands that night.

?

2)?? Spend a day riding motorcycles with Billy Joel and then play a sold-out show together at Yankee Stadium that night.

3) Spend a day riding horses with William Shatner and then sit on the porch at his ranch watching the sun go down, smoking cigars, and sipping an adult beverage.

How did you get into this business?

?I studied and trained to be a singer, dancer, actor but I blew out my knee and chose a different path until I found the Cabaret Competition in San Francisco.? I entered and won and haven?t stopped since.

What is your favorite song? And yes, you can only pick one!!!

?Billy Joel?s ?New York State Of Mind?

What is the last stage show you saw. ?Local or professional. ?

??Shatner?s World? on Broadway

What do you do to prepare for your performances?

?For my big shows, it?s several days of preparation from learning new songs, to putting a set list together, pulling and organizing charts for the band, coordinating with the club and the musicians, making sure my suit and shirts are clean and pressed, pack everything up, get to the sound check, get dressed, put on some make-up, have a glass of champagne and hit the stage swingin?!

?For other appearances, I?m generally just trying to finish everything else up that?s going on so I can get cleaned up, dressed, and at the venue on time to sing my songs!

When do you know it?s time for a Terese Genecco show?

?Honey, it?s ALWAYS time for a show!

Do you make a living at this or do you have a survival job?

?I make my living in show business now.? I have completely transitioned away from my former ?day job? life as an insurance agent.? My business is my singing career and I have been 100% focused on that since I left California three years ago to begin my run of monthly shows at The Iridium in New York City.

?

What is your favorite compliment?

??I saw your show last year and I thought you were very good then? but you?re SO much better now!?

?Seriously, that is my ALL time favorite compliment from a very lovely older lady in upstate NY this past September.

I agree Terese and I cannot wait to celebrate you Tuesday night LIVE AT THE IRIDIUM! I hope that ALL who read this will join me!
