Letter writing has a history that goes back thousands of years. A few surviving letters suggest it was common practice to write letters to the dead in ancient Egypt. Some of these letters were written on bowls found in Egyptian tombs. The letters often asked for help from the departed with some problem the writers were having.?
For hundreds of years, or at least since pens and paper became commonplace, people who wanted to get in touch with other people separated by distance had only one way to do it: they wrote letters, the only means of long-distance communication, at least until the invention of the telegraph in the 19th century. Beginning with Mr. Morse's innovation, modern communication technologies have slowly but all too surely eroded that necessity, first rendering letter writing one option among many and then merely a quaint habit.?
A quaint habit, that, in this overwhelming world of unmediated and unstoppable technology, have perhaps been forgotten and thrown into the abyss. Don't you miss it, the personal touch, the effort it took the writer to pen down his/her thoughts so delicately?
