Bruiser Flint's Drexel Dragons on NCAA Tournament bubble after 59-56 loss to Virginia Commonwealth in CAA Tournent Final

While his former team prepares to open the Atlantic 10 Tournament tonight, Bruiser Flint missed a chance to qualify for the NCAA Tournament on Monday night.

His Drexel Dragons, riding a 19-game winning streak, took on Virginia Commonwealth in the Colonial Athletic Conference final last night and lost 59-56.

Drexel, dispite winning 19 in a row, and posting a 27-6 season record, went from sure fire NCAA status to bubble status almost immediately.

"We won 27 games, what do you want me to do?" said Flint. "We won 19 in a row , what do you want me to do?"

What the tournament committee would have preferred Flint's team to do was win, and thus avoid a classic end of season debate about the who's in, who's out on Selection Sunday.

True be told Drexel came into the CAA Tournament as the #1 seed, but Virginia Commonwealth (28-6) was playing a home game each time it took the floor at the Richmond Coliseum.

The key to Monday night's final was VCU jumping out to a 16-point halftime lead. VCU led by 11 with just over five minutes to play, and hung on to win the CAA title and clinch their first automatic NCAA Tournament bid since 2009.

Back to our man Flint, who will not be treated well by the computer this Sunday. The NCAA Tournament committee loves to play the numbers game, and strength of schedule and RPI will not help Drexel's at large bid hopes.

"I was talking to Cal," Flint was saying. He was referring to John Calipari, his old boss at UMass and now the head coach at Kentucky. The Wildcats own a 22-game winning streak. Drexel's 19-gamer was right behind.

Bruiser Flint may have more in common with the current UMass coach Derek Kellogg in the coming weeks. Both UMass and Drexel seem destine to play in the post season.

The NIT Tournament will make a good landing place for both programs.
